Dagmar, I grew up in a small town, close to Mt. Hood in Oregon. We were the only High School for numerous small towns and it was a pretty good sized school for our remote location. The first time I ever met anyone of color, was a girl who was black and had been adopted by a family in town. I remember thinking she was th prettiest girl in school as she was so totally different from anyone else there.

Then another girl, adopted by another family, from Korea, and we all clammored to her as we thought it was so cool she could write our names and we could not read it, this was junior high. This is how un-diverse this entire region (the more rural areas of Oregon I should say) was up until the late 80's.

Although, we were totally familiar with the many Japanese-Americans who had settled and farmed out there after the interment camps of WWII, plus a great deal of Japanese exchange students.
