Time and the Birthers: Who's Crazy Now?

Time and the Birthers: Who's Crazy Now?

OK, what just happened? Sixty U.S. Senators voted along party lines, in the dark of night, to end debate on a bill that will guarantee a government takeover of healthcare. This is a bill that few have read or understand and that polls show a majority of the American people do not want passed. And the Birthers are called crazy?

Then, last month the President decided to give Khalid Sheikh Mohammed a civil trial in New York City, opening the possibility that he could go free after masterminding the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9/11. And the Birthers are crazy?

The President also went off to get the Nobel Peace Prize, while hacked e-mail exposed the lies behind manmade climate change. Then, the Democrat mayor of Detroit claimed the unemployment rate in his city is now about 50%, while bodies remain unburied in the city's morgue. Still, the Birthers are called crazy.

It's time, at the end of the year, to review what the Birthers claim and to ask again, who's crazy, now? The Birthers claim is rather simple: They believe there is reasonable doubt that Barack Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States. If he is not a natural born citizen, then he is not qualified under the U.S. Constitution to be President. He is a usurper to the office. How to remove a usurper is another question we will deal with later.

Barack Obama claims in his books that he was born in Hawaii and that his mother was a young, U.S. citizen and his father was British/Kenyan. Because both his parents were not American citizens, this story by Obama raises doubts in the minds of some Birthers that he is a natural born citizen.

Accepting that doubt, we also must ask for the proof of Obama's claim to have been born in Hawaii, because a man's word is not enough to establish the natural born status required to be President of the United States. Where is the documented proof that Obama was born in Hawaii?

Some say that proof is in the single document that Obama has presented, his ''Certificate of Live Birth'' issued by the state of Hawaii. Is this the proof necessary to dismiss the Birthers and certify their insanity? No. It isn't.

Any reasonable person must see that there is a difference between a COLB and a birth certificate. A birth certificate usually names the hospital and the attending doctors. These data are not on the Obama document.

COLBs issued by the state of Hawaii at the alleged date of Obama's birth were also issued to newborns who were not born in Hawaii, upon just the testimony of one parent. Furthermore, the U.S. State Department usually does not accept a COLB as proof of citizenship to obtain a U.S. Passport. A COLB is not necessary and sufficient proof to establish natural born citizenship.

What if a reasonable person, in spite of the above objections, is inclined to accept the COLB as proof of natural born citizenship because he wants Obama to be President? What do we know about that document, its origins, its status, and its provenance? When we answer these questions, we are still left with a reasonable doubt about Obama's natural born status.

Most Americans only know about Obama's COLB and various other documents that claim to be his birth certificates from the Internet. Images of these documents appear on various websites, but as many will attest, Internet documents are not reliable. Some claim the Internet images of the COLB have been altered. Others claim the birth certificates have been made up from thin air.

No reasonable person should accept only what is on the Internet as proof that Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States and therefore qualified to be President.

There are a few people who claim to have seen Obama's original COLB. Can we accept their testimony as the proof we need and put to rest the Birther's accusations? No, we cannot. The witnesses to Obama's original COLB are too few and too biased.

Staff members at FactCheck.org, funded by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, claim they have seen the original Obama COLB, and we should accept them at their word. This document was supposedly brought to their Washington, D. C. office from the White House by Tommy Vietor.

This document was obtained by Vietor from the Obama campaign office in Chicago. That office is now closed, its staff dispersed and the original COLB was taken back by Vietor and may be in a White House office.

In fact, no one seems to know where the original COLB now resides after its short journey, like a Mayfly, into light. It is doubtful that it could ever be presented again as proof.

The state of Hawaii claims there is an original document (a birth certificate?) that exists in its safekeeping, that supports the COLB they issued, but its contents cannot be released except by authorization from Mr. Obama. He refuses to authorize that release.

The state of Hawaii also makes no comment about a copy of the form that must be filled out to get a COLB or a copy of any record of payment. We have no proof that Mr. Obama actually requested the COLB that is touted as proof of his birth in Hawaii. This means there is not even proof available that Obama applied for the document that FactCheck.org saw or whose image appears on the Internet.

Given the history of this COLB, it's questionable status, the few who actually saw it, and its present whereabouts, any conscientious person must conclude that there is reasonable doubt about this one and only document and the natural born status of Mr. Obama.

Mr. Obama has sealed all the other records that could shed light on his natural born status. We do not know, for example, if he applied for financial aide as a foreign student while in college. In truth, the Birthers are not crazy, but reasonable men and women. It is crazy not to see this.

Some argue that the Birthers are crazy by creating a tempest in a teapot. They believe the 2010 elections will remove many Democrats from office and shift the political pendulum back to center.

The hope that counts on the remedy of future elections seems to be wishful thinking. If things are as bad as the talk radio hosts tell us, no election will undo the slide into a fundamentally changed America.

Others who doubt Obama's right to be POTUS believe that because he has been elected and certified by Congress, the only way he can be removed from office is by either the Supreme Court or by impeachment.

Neither of these alternatives seem likely. The courts are reluctant to get involved in presidential elections and their outcome, again. A case of quo warranto brought in a District of Columbia court may bring to light some of the documents need to settle the Obama birth question. Nevertheless, such a case may not be enough to remove a usurper from office.

Impeachment is unlikely in a Democrat controlled Congress, no matter what facts are presented. Furthermore, impeachment applies only to a person qualified to be President.

Because Mr. Obama may be a usurper, that is, someone who is not really a U.S. President because he is unqualified to be one, he cannot be impeached. He and all those he has appointed must simply be removed from the White House as pretenders.

If it is established that Obama is in fact a usurper, then it will be up to the U.S. military to remove him from the White House. As a usurper commander-in-chief, Obama cannot give valid orders to members of the U.S. military.

Members of the U.S. military are bound by oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution. They have given their word that a usurper will not be President. Because of the Birthers and the U.S. military, 2010 may be the year the politics of Washington, D. C. comes to resemble the politics of Tegucigalpa.

If I am a birther, then so is the whole US government. I had to provide an official birth certificate to enter college. I had to also provide one to the US Navy to accept their scholarship. I later had to provide one to the US Air Force when the Navy and I parted company, and I entered the Air Force. I also had to provide an official birth certificate to the State Department in order to get a US passport. Last but not least, I could not start collecting social security until I provided that department an official birth certificate. You would think Obama could do something ONCE that I had to do at least 5 times. Maybe the government thought what I was doing was more important to the country than what Obama is doing.
