Jail officials begin questioning inmates about immigration status

On Jan. 1, the new immigration enforcement law went into effect in Tennessee that requires the booking officers at the J. Alexander Leech Criminal Justice Complex/Jail in Madison County to ask all inmates that are being processed the following two questions, according to a news release:

"Where were you born?",

and

"Are you here illegally?"

This legislation was proposed by Homeland Security and supported by law enforcement agencies, according to the release.
