"Carol's surgery was successful. We are not out of the woods yet, but signs look very positive," spokesman Jesse Benton said in a message on a Ron Paul Web site.
Benton also said doctors may remove a breathing tube today.
Carol Paul, 72, was hospitalized on Thursday, but Benton and other spokespeople for the congressman would not say at which hospital she is being treated or for what she is being treated.
"We're trying to protect her privacy," said Ron Paul's congressional spokeswoman, Rachel Mills.
Carol Paul, who is known as Luvie by her family and many of those in Brazoria County, had surgery in Iowa last year after being hospitalized for shortness of breath and low blood pressure while campaigning with her husband. Doctors installed a heart pacemaker at the time.
Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, was the Libertarian Party nominee for president in 1988 and ran unsuccessfully for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.
His campaign drew support from Republicans, independents and Democrats.
Ron Paul and Carol Wells met in high school in Pittsburgh and were married in 1957. They moved to Brazoria County in 1968 when he started his career as an obstetrician. They have five children and 18 grandchildren.
