Well, the DOJ knew about it because they were spying on Cohen's emails, probably wired in to his phone calls too. I guess they were looking for emails between Cohen and Trump, but there weren't any. Trump doesn't use email.

So if DOJ was spying on Cohen were they spying on everyone who works for Trump or worked on his campaign??!! That's the only explanation.
