UCSD Gets $75M Gift to Build Hospital

San Diego — UC San Diego said April 1 that it will build a 10-story, 245-bed specialty medical center in La Jolla, next to Thornton Hospital, funded in part by a $75 million donation.

The gift, from Qualcomm Inc. co-founder Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan, represents the largest gift in UCSD Health Sciences history.

“The Jacobs’ support of our vision will literally change the landscape of health care in San Diego, and strengthen our ability to serve patients from the region and beyond with services on two campuses, in Hillcrest and La Jolla,â€
