Venezuelans fleeing at 'staggering' rate, UN says; exodus tops 4 million

LIMA, Peru – The number of Venezuelans fleeing the country is accelerating at a "staggering" rate, the United Nations reported Friday, as the South American nation is caught in a political struggle and grinding humanitarian crisis.
The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said there are now more than 4 million Venezuelans living abroad – and that 1 million have left in the last seven months alone."The pace of the outflow from Venezuela has been staggering," UNHCR said in a statement. "From some 695,000 at the end of 2015, the number of refugees and migrants from Venezuela had skyrocketed to over 4 million by mid-2019."
Neighboring Colombia is now home to 1.3 million Venezuelans, followed by Peru with 768,000, Chile with 288,000, Ecuador with 263,000, Brazil with 168,000 and Argentina with 130,000. However, almost every country in the region is hosting "a significant number of Venezuelans," UNHCR said.
Most countries have taken unprecedented steps to help the migrants, including allowing them to enter on expired passports and providing residency and work programs. But that might be changing.Peru, which has had some of the most welcoming policies toward Venezuelan migrants, announced Thursday that it will begin requiring them to apply for visas at Peruvian embassies in Venezuela or Colombia.
The new requirement comes as dozens of Venezuelans have been expelled from Peru after committing crimes and as President Martin Vizcarra is facing pushback from those worried about what they see as uncontrolled immigration.Colombia has also complained that the international community isn't doing enough to help Venezuela's neighbors handle the influx, which is taxing the region's health, education and social security systems."These alarming figures highlight the urgent need to support host communities in the receiving countries," said Eduardo Stein, the special representative for Venezuelan refugees and migrants for UNHCR and the International Organization on Migration. "Latin American and Caribbean countries are doing their part to respond to this unprecedented crisis, but they cannot be expected to continue doing it without international help."Venezuela has been trapped in an economic and humanitarian crisis for years amid falling oil production, hyperinflation, and widespread corruption and mismanagement. More recently, economic sanctions from Washington and elsewhere are thought to be exacerbating the crisis.Leader Nicolas Maduro is fighting for his political survival against Juan Guaido, the head of congress whom the United States and more than 50 other countries consider Venezuela's legitimate president.

Venezuela's Inflation Finally Drops Below 1 Million Percent

Consumer prices for the 12 months ending May were up 'only' 815,194%.

Finally, some relief for Venezuelans - and we're only half joking.

Annual inflation in the country has dropped below one million percent in May for the first time since 2018, Reuters reports. And how did the country magically start to rope in inflation? The central bank restricted the domestic money supply - imagine that.
Consumer prices for the 12 months ending May were up 'only' 815,194%, according to the opposition-run congress. This compared to 1.3 million percent in April. Prices were up 906% in the first five months of the year, according to the data.
The "slowdown" comes as a result of regulations on banks that require them to keep a larger percentage of the bolivar in reserve and because the country's Central Bank is issuing fewer Bolivars than in the past. Ergo, the banking system has less capacity to lend.

Legislator Angel Alvarado said: “They are slowing inflation through greater economic contraction.”

Regardless, the figures are far more alarming than the ones published by the central bank last week, which indicated inflation at about 130,060% in the 12 months ending April. These numbers were part of the first official economic indicators released in more than five years.
The figures also showed that the economy contracted 22.5% in the third quarter of 2018.
President Nicholas Maduro says that the country's economic problems are the result of U.S. sanctions that have crippled the country's ability to export earnings and blocked it from borrowing overseas. The reality is that a "dysfunctional system" of price and currency controls in the country - alongside of nationalizing several large private businesses - led to the country's collapse. We've recently documented the 4 million people that have now fled the country as a result of the chaos, alongside of the country's recent $750 million default on a gold backed swap and the opposition leader Juan Guaido's recent admission that he bathes using a bucket of water.

Are we paying attention here in the U.S.?

Throwing money at this problem SOLVES nothing, and they continue to breed in the dirt, MORE mouths they cannot feed, disgusting!

We give these 3rd world countries, all over the world, BILLIONS of dollars for decades with ZERO results.

Three million cowards fled. Go home and fight your own battles, no TPS, we do not want these people here.

Give those millions of men guns and send them back! Fight your own civil war and take your country back. That is NOT our responsibility to do it for them or keep giving them our money!

Columbia does not want them, Central America does not want them, USA does not want them, and Mexico does not want them!

They bring their misery, crime, overbreeding, diseases, and they are bankrupting us all making our lives hell.

Those women become prostitutes, get pregnant, full of diseases. No one wants this!

We (Mexico and the US) have children so fat they look like parade floats about to burst... yet they insist children here are "starving" and capitalism is to blame, and socialism is the answer.
When was the last time *anyone in the US starved to death?
*other than someone in a leftist run city, detention/foster care facility.
