Weekend violence: 1 dead, 19 wounded in shootings in Chicago

A man was killed and at least 19 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the weekend -- raising the toll from gun violence so far this year to nearly 2,700 people shot, according to police and data compiled by the Tribune.

The fatal shooting
occurred around 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Willye B. White Park in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. It was the second homicide in the park in two years.


Police say Eric Jordan, of the 4600 block of North Racine Avenue, was shot in the chest and back. He was taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead.


The other shootings occurred across the city from 5:15 p.m. Friday until 1:20 a.m. Monday.

The number of people shot in Chicago so far this year is 2,675, according to data compiled by the Tribune. That's 416 more than the same time last year.


There have been 434 homicides so far this year, 48 more than last year at this time, the data show.

Ten people were shot, including one fatally, in separate shootings between 9:35 a.m. Saturday and 4:15 a.m. Sunday.
Four people were also shot between 5:15 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday, and six people were shot between 2:38 p.m. Sunday and 1:20 a.m. Monday.
About 12:30 p.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot in Rogers Park on the Far North Side, police said.
Eric Jordan, of the 4600 block of North Racine Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:04 p.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
He was in the 1600 block of West Howard Street when he was shot in the chest and back, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago police spokeswoman. He was taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
The man was found in Willye B. White Park, where an event let out as police investigated the scene. Another man was shot and killed at the same park in July 2013.
Police initially said the man was 26 years old.
The latest nonfatal shooting occurred at 1:20 a.m. Monday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.
A 28-year-old man was discovered on the sidewalk in the 5400 block of South Paulina Street with gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and the left buttocks. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
Police said the man was being uncooperative, and no one was in custody as a result of the shooting.
In other shootings:
Around midnight Sunday, a 24-year-old man was hurt in a shooting in the Uptown neighborhood on the North Side, Alfaro said.
The man was on a sidewalk in the 800 block of West Sunnyside Avenue when someone fired shots from a passing gray sedan, Alfaro said.
The man was hit in the right leg and was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
Police officers blocked off the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue and Hazel Street with yellow police tape. Inside the crime scene, a parked Toyota Yaris stood with shattered windows on Sunnyside. About half a block east, a blood trail from the wounded man stained the sidewalk and was cordoned off by another circle of yellow crime tape.
Around 11 p.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was taking the garbage out when someone shot him in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.
The 21-year-old was in an alley in the 0-100 block of East 100th Street when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck, police said.
The man was hit in the back of his right knee and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized, police said.
The man appeared to not be the intended target of the shooting, police said. Police found at least 15 shell casings.
Earlier, at 3:58 p.m., two men were injured in a shooting in the 6600 block of South Union Avenue, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a police spokeswoman.
A 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were standing on a sidewalk near an alley in the area when someone in a nearby minivan fired shots, police said.
The 21-year-old was shot in the chest and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, Trainor said.
A 20-year-old man was injured in the same shooting, suffering a graze wound to his heel, police said. The 20-year-old managed to get himself to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where his condition stabilized, police said.
An earlier shooting happened at 2:38 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Damen Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, Trainor said.
The victim was a 29-year-old man who was shot in the wrist, Trainor said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
The man was on the street when a red minivan drove up and someone inside began firing. The van then fled, and no one was in custody.
At least 13 other people were wounded in shootings since late Friday evening across Chicago.
