White House ‘Concedes Defeat’ on Gun Control – Have We Won This Battle?

Democrats seemed confident, even cocky, in the first quarter of 2013 that they were going to pass sweeping gun control legislation before April.

Now, Democratic leadership, particularly The White House, is stepping back from its gun control push and is even distancing itself from anti gun groups.

According to a POLITICO report, Vice President Joe “Double Barrels to the Sky” Biden delivered subdued remarks to gun control supporters yesterday in a planned event. The best progress he had for them? Some of the president’s watered down executive orders in regards to background check data and gun research had almost been fully implemented. POLITICO also points out that the anti gun groups who had been working so closely with the White House for months were no longer part of the inner loop. Weekly gun control meetings have been canceled for weeks now and supporters weren’t made aware of Tuesday’s event until the general public was.
The famed Toomey-Manchin universal background check legislation has stalled in the Senate. No new sponsors have come forward, and even Pat Toomey, one of the bill’s authors, has publicly said he will no longer push the legislation. Harry Reid has no plans to bring the legislation back up for another vote.

Anti-gun zealots in the Democratic party, such as Michael Bloomberg continue their anti-gun campaigns. Bloomberg is spending tens of millions of dollars on TV ads targeting senators who voted against the background check legislation. However, most of those senators are actually embracing the ads, using them as a badge of honor. Democratic Senator Mark Pryor, from Arkansas, one of four Democrats to vote against the bill, made his own TV ad in which he basically said he was proud of his defense of the Second Amendment and was doing something right since Bloomberg was targeting him. Even anti gun zealot Chuck Schumer (NY-D) said Bloomberg’s ads were ineffective, showing a rift in the Democratic party on gun control.

At the state level, Democrats are already feeling the heat from hastily pushing through anti gun legislation in some states. Two Colorado state senators are going to be recalled over their support of anti gun legislation. In Connecticut, a Republican took a State House seat from Democrats for the first time in 40 years during a special election.

Recent Obama’s non-profit organization, Organizing for Action, scheduled anti gun rallies across the country. In some cases, fewer than 5 people showed up at these rallies. This is happening while pro gun rallies across the country continue to garner thousands of supporters.

Perhaps Democrats are starting to remember the Republican Revolution of 1994 in which Republicans took dozens of House, Senate, and governorships from a Democratic majority during the midterm elections immediately following the passage of the 1994 “Assault Weapons Ban”.

While it’s starting to seem that we have won this battle, it is important to remain diligent and start preparing for 2014. If you are not registered to vote, do so now. The outcome of the 2014 midterm elections will likely determine the future of gun rights for decades to come.
