Whites a minority in state, but still a majority of voters

Field Poll shows that minority voters are nonetheless one reason Democrats dominate.

White non-Hispanics in California have lost their majority status over the past 30 years (they're now 43 percent of all residents), but they continue to account for the majority of voters (65 percent), according to a new report from The Field Poll.

So while the state grows increasingly diverse, ethnic voters lag in electoral muscle. The sleeping giant still slumbers.

Latinos now account for 37 percent of the population but just 21 percent of registered voters. Asians comprise 14 percent of the population and 8 percent of voters. Blacks are 6 percent of both the population and the voter rolls.

These traditional minorities may be slow to vote, but those that do participate are a key reason that Democrats dominate the state. White non-Hispanics make up 79 percent of Republicans, but just 55 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of non-partisan voters.

And you might not know it from the people they elected, but California voters are better educated than 30 years ago – and older voters are a growing portion of the electorate.

•46 percent are college graduates (36 percent in 1978).

•74 percent are homeowners (66 percent in 1978).

•38 percent are Protestants (50 percent in 1978).

•68 percent of voters are 40 or older (58 percent in 1978).

    Dunn returns

Former Democratic state Sen. Joe Dunn is stepping down as CEO of the California Medical Association after three years in the post. The Capitol Weekly reports that e-mails from Dunn cited a desire to spend more time with his family in Orange County.

Dunn was one of Orange County's most productive legislators during his two terms in Sacramento. If he were to seek a return to elected office next year, it would probably mean a move from his very nice Santa Ana home. Open seats in the central part of the county include the Fourth District supervisor's seat and the 68th Assembly District seat – both districts favor Republicans in voter registration and neither includes Dunn's residence.

There's a distant whisper about the possibility that Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Santa Ana (yes, she's moved from Garden Grove to Santa Ana) might run for governor. In the unexpected case of Sanchez becoming the next chief executive of the state, Dunn would be an instant Democratic frontrunner for her seat.

White non-Hispanics in California now 43 percent of all residents
Latinos in California now account for 37 percent
Asians in California now comprise 14 percent
Blacks in California now are 6 percent
Total Pop in California - 100%

    Whites a minority in state??????????????????

Also in Los Angeles county they estimate that there are between 2 to 3 million "hispanics" and that over 50% are in the country illegally!

Stop illegal aliens from coming in and deport (easier now that the state is broke as they are leaving to other states for "free $$) and watch the numbers change.

That means that less than 50% of the population is White.

50% plus one person would make Whites the Majority.

Non-Hispanic white. If I hear that one more time I will puke! When did Hispanic become a race and what sort of idiots mix race and ethnicity? What about non-Hispanic Asians, as I once worked with a guy whose parents came from China and he was born in Cuba. So he speaks fluent Spanish, but he is Asian, a non-Hispanic Asian.
If you look at ethnicity, or you look at race, you don't mix apples and oranges!!!!!
