Children as young as nine are carrying knives and 69,000 a year are wounded by blades as areas turn into a “Wild West” thanks to the UK’s violent crime wave, a senior police officer has said.

Assistant chief constable Jacqueline Sebire of Bedfordshire police said that after more than 20 years in the force, the past few years has felt “completely different,” adding:
“Wild West? It can be… it’s happening in broad daylight, they’re in public spaces.”
She was speaking to a joint summit of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Police Chiefs’ Council summit in London, where other top cops expressed concern about rising violent crime and slammed the focus on hate crimes and offensive comments.
THe senior officer explained that in the year to June there were 69,000 child woundings — defined as a stabbing or other violent incident resulting in a severe injury to a child aged between ten and 15 years old — an increase of 4,000 on the year before.
According to The Times, she said: “This feels completely different. I’ve worked in some really challenging London boroughs.
She continued: “This level of violence, this constant torrent of every single day another stabbing, another violent incident that we can’t seem to get ahead of.”
Adding: “There are children as young as 12 involved in stabbings. We have nine and 10-year-olds carrying knives.”
Sebire also explained how violent clashes were happening in public spaces in broad daylight, showing footage of youths shooting each other in a car park.
The “disregard to some of the consequences or that they might get found out, that’s what feels different to me”, she said. “We’ve always had violence, we’ve always had people shoot and stab each other.
“But the level of increase and just how sustained it is… it’s just constant. I worry that if we can’t get this right with [agency] partners, and as a society and a community, I do worry that this will continue.”
According to statistics released last month, one in five adults in England and Wales experienced crime last year whilst knife crime in London has hit its highest ever level.
For the year ending June 2018, homicide has risen by 14 percent, violent crime involving blades or knives by 12 percent, sexual offences by 18 percent, and robbery by 22 percent.

A 17-year-old teen has been slain outside a busy London Underground station just hours after a 15-year-old boy was killed just yards from his home as London’s violent crime wave continues.

The two killings this week came as the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, insisted that knife crime in the city has “plateaued” and played down fears officers are losing control.
Schoolboy Jay Hughes, 15, was fatally stabbed just 100 yards from his home after being attacked outside a chicken shop in Lewisham, south-east London.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Soole, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said:
“We know that this was an awful premeditated attack on a young boy who sadly lost his life as a result. I would appeal to anyone with information to get in touch with us.”
Just hours later on Friday evening, the Met said that a 17-year-old boy had also died after being stabbed yesterday outside Clapham South station in south-west London.
There were also reports on Friday night of a 16-year-old boy stabbed on New Kent Road in Southwark, also in south London.

The killing of Jay Hughes took London’s total number of deaths from violent crime this year to an estimated 117, surpassing the total for the whole of last year.
His aunt Rochelle, 32, told the Evening Standard that the boy, who lived nearby with his grandmother, had not been involved with gangs.
“He said he was going out to get some food and he never came back. He loved riding his mountain bike, was very bright and brilliant at art. He wanted to be a cartoonist,” she said.
“He was basically a young boy who played out on his bike and met up with friends. It was a normal day it seemed, but he never came back. We are heartbroken.”
Speaking on Radio 4, Commissioner Dick said the murder was a “horrible thing to happen to that family, to that community and of course to that poor lad, we must focus on this.”
Yet she also claimed that police were winning with the fight against knife crime, adding: “Each month I can see it coming down.
“When I started it was about 40 [stabbings] a month. Now it’s about 30 a month but that’s still 30 teenagers stabbed, which is awful.”
According to statistics released last month, one in five adults in England and Wales experienced crime in 2017, whilst knife crime in London has hit its highest ever level.

London children are most at risk of being stabbed as they leave school, new research indicates, prompting calls for new measures to protect youngsters.

A study found that children were more vulnerable to knife attacks between 4 pm and 6 pm, noting a “significant peak,” and stabbings involving young victims are more likely to occur close to their home or school.
Stabbings during this two-hour window, when children leave the school gates, accounted for 22 per cent of all child stabbings, compared with 11 per cent of young adult stabbings.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London, Barts Health NHS Trust, and two ambulance services used data from 1,824 people under the age of 25 who had been treated for a stab wound at a London trauma centre over an 11-year period.
Of these, 172 were children, 861 were aged between 16 and 19, and 791 were aged between 20 and 24.
Almost three-quarters (71 per cent) were from poorer neighbourhoods, whilst just 1 per cent were from wealthier areas.

The time and location of stabbings were collated from ambulance service data as well as information from the hospital trauma registry.
Between 2004 and 2014, the annual number of presentations for “assault resulting in penetrating trauma” increased by an average of 25 per cent each year.
The results tally with recent data from the Office for National Statistics, showing for the year to June 2018, police in London recorded 14,987 knife crimes – representing a 15 per cent rise in just 12 months.
This year alone in the capital there have been 119 murders, more than in the whole of last year, and 74 of which were stabbings.

A family from Romania have left Britain after one of them was murdered in Sadiq Khan’s London, saying the city is “too dangerous”.

Beniamin Pieknyi, 21, and a friend were targeted randomly by a multi-racial gang led by Ukrainian migrant Valdyslav Yakymchuk — who had been in the country for only two years — in the Stratford Centre.
CCTV footage shows the gang had been harassing members of the public for some time when they came across Beniamin and his friend, and began goading them, throwing punches, stealing a water bottle from Beniamin and taking his friend’s glasses.
The pair were ushered away by a security guard, but the gang pursued them, cornering him in a Subway restaurant and administering a savage beating before Yakymchuk produced a long blade and stabbed him in the heart.
The incident prompted Beniamin’s family to return to their comparatively poor homeland, with his sister Iulia Pieknyi commenting that the crime-ridden British capital has become a place where “terrible things can happen in the blink of an eye, and if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person you could end up dead.”

“Since the day of 20 March 2018, is not feeling like a human anymore,” said Beniamin’s mother Irina in a statement.
“It’s not easy bringing [children] up and giving them an education. It’s so unfair that one of them was taken away and part of my heart was taken with him. The pain I feel since that day will stay with me forever. I am asking if the ones who did this are even aware that their actions have destroyed a family?” she asked.
“Who’s given them the right to take away my son’s life? Are they aware of the pain, the tears and destruction they left behind? Are they aware that our family is not the same as before and will never be whole again? I’m at a loss. I have no words to describe how I feel. What made them do this to my son? I cannot find the strength to face them and it’s breaking my heart.”

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Ian Titterrell claimed the sentences handed down to the gang for the killings were a “reflection of the devastation and upset that has been caused so needlessly to Beniamin’s family”, but they were not particularly long.
Yakymchuk should serve 24 years for the killing, meaning he will only be in his fifties on release. Two accomplices, Kevin Duarte and Moses Kasule, will serve only twelve years each for manslaughter, while another two, Alexis Varela and Mario Zvavamwe, will receive just 40 months and 30 months, respectively, for “violent disorder” — and likely be eligible for automatic release on licence halfway or two-thirds of the way through their terms.

A woman was struck over the head with a machete less than four hours after another woman was stabbed to death in south-east London as a violent crime wave in the capital continues.

A 55-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder after a 75-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Peckham in the borough of Southwark.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that emergency services were called to Ethnard Road, Peckham, on Friday at 4:04 pm where they found the senior citizen with multiple stab wounds.
Despite being treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service (LAS), she was pronounced dead at 4:37 pm.
The suspect was taken to an east London hospital to be treated for a stab wound, according to Scotland Yard, before being taken to a police station where he remains.
The man and the woman were known to each other, according to the statement.
The death brings the total of homicides in the capital to 120 — outpacing last year’s total murder rate of 116.

Less than four hours later at 7:18 pm, police were called to an address in Charlton in the south-east London borough of Greenwich after a woman was hit over the head with a machete by an unknown assailant.

A heavy-built “Asian” male in his 30s snuck upon the woman, aged in her 50s, and struck her before fleeing the scene.
She had suffered a cut to her head was taken to a hospital where her injuries were deemed not life-threatening.
Police continue to investigate in search of the assailant.
Since Labour’s Sadiq Khan has been mayor of London, the capital has seen knife crime rise by almost a third from the years 2015/16 to 2016/17. Recent statistics have revealed that London hit its highest ever level of knife crime in the year to June 2018.
In November, the mayor made the astounding admission that, after the rise in stabbings during his less than three-year tenure to date, it could take a decade to bring knife crime in the capital under control.

Residents have formed a neighbourhood watch to patrol the streets at night in a town where police have “given up” investigating crime.

The volunteers of the Foggy Furze Community Watch group in Hartlepool, which has been active for the past three months, say that they had been frustrated by the lack of support from police after being victims of crime, and decided to get together to “protect what’s ours,” reports the Hartlepool Mail.
“We feel we have no option, but to try to look after ourselves,” said Darren Price, who came up with the idea of running patrols in the town, which has a population of 90,000.
“People are scared especially on the night. It is work vans getting broken into, houses getting broken into, anti-social behaviour.”
“We don’t encourage anybody on the patrols to engage with anybody who commits a crime, all we ask is report it to the police,” he added.

The group of concerned citizens, which coordinates patrols and reports crime via their Facebook group, denies they are “vigilantes,” and say they have a female volunteer who logs incidents — such as theft, break-ins, and lead being removed from roofs — on a spreadsheet.
One resident, Paul Timlin, told The Times he had to get in touch with a local ‘hard man’ to help in the recovery of his tools after he waited two weeks for police to investigate, which they never did.
It’s a low-grade crime to them,” Mr Timlin said. “To me it’s £1,500-worth of tools.”
Another, cab driver Stephen Picton, said: “One of the lads started patrolling the streets of Hartlepool because of the rise in crime. He reported a few incidents and the police never came back to him. The council never answered him back. A few of us decided to join him. There are no police in the area so something has to be done.
“Sometimes I finish my taxi shift at 2 am and spend an extra two hours driving or walking around. I would rather be in bed fast asleep,” Mr Picton added.
Residents and local authorities have complained that Hartlepool has been hit by cuts to policing since austerity in 2010 and say they have sympathy with the force. The BBC reported that on Saturday there were only ten officers in the north-eastern town and at one point, there were no officers available to respond to calls.

“Police have effectively given up on coming out because they just don’t have the resources — victims get a crime number and that’s it.” Hartlepool’s Labour MP Mike Hill told the Daily Mail.
“Frightened, hard-working taxpayers feel the streets have been abandoned by police. The situation in Hartlepool is typical of most British towns. It is a damning indictment of underfunding up and down the country.”
The report comes after the chairman of London’s Metropolitan Police Federation Ken March suggested that police may let violent suspects go unless they get help from the public — a call rapidly contradicted by Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Sir Steve House.
Distancing the department from Mr Marsh’s comments on Tuesday, Sir Steve said the public “should only intervene if they can safely do so.”
The comments came after footage surfaced of two police officers being brutally attacked by suspects while motorists drove by.
Chairman of the Police Federation John Apter has called for police, who are not routinely armed, to be issued Tasers amidst rising attacks on officers.

A man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder following a spate of stabbings in the Edmonton area of north London during the past week.

Jason Kakaire, 29, from Cameron Close in Edmonton appeared before magistrates at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday the 5th of April.
In addition to the attempted murder charges, he was charged with five counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, according to the BBC.

The charges are in relation to a string of stabbings between Saturday and Tuesday, in which five people were attacked in separate instances, seemingly at random.
Four of the stabbings occurred within ten hours of each other last weekend, with a fifth taking place on Tuesday morning.
All of the attacks were in the Edmonton area, with the victim of the fifth attack being found at the same location as the first incident is believed to have taken place.

The London Metropolitan Police said they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation.
“The investigation was led by detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command with officers from the North Area Command Unit,” Scotland Yard said.
A 45-year-old woman, believed to have been the first victim in the series of assaults, has been left paralysed after her spinal cord was severed, prosecutor Harika Yuksel told the magistrates’ court.
In the latest attack, a man in his 30s was left in critical condition when he was stabbed in Fairfield Road in Edmonton, according to The Guardian, but is now in a stable condition in hospital. Another victim remains in a stable condition in hospital, while the two others have been discharged.
Mr Kakaire has been remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on the 3rd of May.
The charges come as knife crime in the capital reaches a 40-year high, with 14,987 knife related incidents reported in London alone.
