Immigration issue drives filings in Carpentersville; two surprisingly absent in E. Dundee

Come spring, the Fox Valley will have some fresh faces on its local village and school boards.

The deadline to file for open seats in the April 17 election passed Monday.

And with several incumbents opting out of this year’s fray, many elected boards will see at least one new member take office this year.

    Carpentersville

The ballot for Carpentersville village board is a mix of newcomers and some familiar names.

Incumbents James Frost, Paul Humpfer and Judy Sigwalt are each striving to retain their seats for another 4-year term. They will need to fend off challenges from a slew of residents.

Sherry Dobson and Kent Baldwin are seeking to move from the village’s audit and finance and park committees, respectively.

Meanwhile, two candidates with strong opposing viewpoints on a tabled immigration-related ordinance will also figure into the April 17 election.

Frank Stoneham, a member of the Fox Valley Citizens for Legal Immigration, a grass-roots group that supports Humpfer and Sigwalt’s proposed ordinance that would crack down on landlords and business owners who rent to or hire illegal immigrants, plans to sway the vote in favor of the ordinance.

Conversely, Laura Zambrano is the Carpentersville Community Alliance’s candidate in the race. The Alliance is a group of predominantly Latino business owners opposing the ordinance that, in addition to cracking down on illegal immigrants, would recognize English as the village’s official language.

Education, not punishment, is critical in making sure Carpentersville businesses and landlords deal only with legal immigrants, a local business owner said Thursday.
