What If The Lights Stay Out?

A mangled mess of tree limbs and wires are seen in the aftermath of last week's storms in Takoma Park, Md.

Massive storms left nearly 2 million people in the United States without power, and some without basic emergency services, last weekend and early this week.
People scattered from Washington, D.C., through 10 States from Indiana to Delaware — including about 410,000 in West Virginia; 400,000 in Ohio; and 340,000 in Virginia — had no electricity by Monday evening after storms last Friday and Saturday devastated power infrastructure.

In Northern Virginia, a commercial power failure at Verizon, the company that operates the area’s 911 call systems, left residents unable to report emergencies over the weekend. While no deaths or serious injuries were reported, the incident highlights the importance of being prepared for a disaster that causes the power grid to fail.

Here are some basic things that everyone should have on hand for an emergency (from Bob Livingston’s How to Survive the Collapse of Civilization):

• Weapons and plenty of ammunition (A handgun, 12-gauge shotgun, .22 rifle and larger caliber rifle — .308 or 30-06 — would be excellent choices for whatever comes your way in defense or hunting needs.)
• Good hunting knife and sharpening stone
• Extra clothing, hats and boots
• Fire starter kit
• Candles, lanterns, matches, lighters
• Extra fuel for your cook stove
• Compass
• Bear pepper spray (Even if you don’t live in bear territory this can be useful to help you deter looters or someone wishing to do harm.)
• Rain gear
• Tarpaulin
• Fishing gear (rod, reel, stocked tackle box)
• Chain saw and extra fuel
• An axe and a hatchet or hand axe
• File for sharpening axe and chain saw
• Gas masks and extra filters
• Vegetable seeds for planting a garden
• Tools for tilling the ground and digging
• A bicycle (It would give you alternate mode of transportation as long as the streets are safe to travel on.)

While many of the above preparations are for a long-term grid-down scenario and may seem excessive for a power outage, it is better to be prepared for the lights to stay off forever than to have to go about gathering these items after the fact.

It is also a good idea to have a store of clean water and non-perishable food on hand for the short term along with batteries, flashlights, medical kits and other “no-brainer” emergency supplies.

The Many Uses Of Survival Knives

Be sure to pack a knife in your bug-out bag.

Let’s face the facts: When you pack your bug-out bag, you don’t want to be bogged down with multiple items when one will do the trick.

One of the most valuable and variable tools that you can use in the wild is the survival knife.

Some people call it a hunting knife; but when you are in the wild or in a crisis situation, it takes on the much greater role of helping you survive. It would also be inappropriate to call it a hunting knife, as its uses are considerably more diverse than just hunting.

There are seven major ways to use a knife. Some of them may seem obvious to you; but, surprisingly, not many people know every use for a knife. Even in writing this, my eyes were opened to how important having a knife can be.

Hunting
Hunting is the most rudimentary reason for owning a knife. It is so easy for us in the modern world to take firearms for granted. There are many scenarios wherein eventually we may not have guns and we will need to survive. In that case, hunting may be accomplished with a knife.

You can use a knife to snare a trap as well as stab your prey. This would take some time to learn how to do, but it works. A knife can also be used to skin the animals that you have killed.

Self-Defense
If you need to defend yourself or family against an oncoming attacker, it’s better to have a weapon than not. Knives are one of the lightest and easiest weapons to use against any attacker, whether it be man or beast.

Cutting Wood
Knives are great for whittling and cutting wood. Most survival knives are strong enough to cut through moderately sized logs. You can actually saw fairly well with them. You can also use the knives to shave off pieces of wood that would be good for kindling, which leads us to No. 4.

Starting Fires
Knives are great to start fires with. Making kindling with a knife is just a start. Striking a knife on flint or similar rock creates sparks that can start a fire.

Making Other Weapons
In every war movie or film about fighting in the thick of things when you are “out of options,” the hero almost always makes weapons out of the materials around him using a knife. This would be no different for you in the wild. One of the first things that you can do is make spears, arrows and other simple and sharp weapons using a knife and nature.

Think about hunting in this environment. You are going to want to avoid having to get close to animals; that is an extremely difficult to do. It’s only smart to make other weapons that are more long-range, like spears and arrows. You could also fashion a bow to shoot the arrows with by using your knife.

Slicing Softer Materials
Knives are great for cutting rope, bandages and other materials that you will need to bind things with. It’s easier to have a knife on you than a pair of scissors and a knife.
Knives are also great if you need to cut your own skin to remove something from it. We hope that type of situation doesn’t ever happen, but you never know.

Cutting A Path
You just never know where you’re going to end up when you are in the wild. You may be in the woods or in the thick of things and need to get through in a hurry. Again, it sounds like something from movies like “Rambo,” but knives really can be used for this. After all, you want to see where you’re going and not have to drag through the unknown.

Knives are a must-have for any preparing that you are doing. As you can see from this list, there are many uses for the small, lightweight piece of metal that you can carry with you.

Be safe, be prepared and, as always, be smarter than they think you are.

When millions lose their jobs and have no hope of finding gainful employment, what options do they have for keeping food on the table?
The obvious answer for those who have become dependent on government safety nets is nutritional food assistance, and to date, more than 48 million Americans have come to rely on the program to stay alive.
But what if your country reaches its breaking point? What if the price of essential food gets so high due to inflation or supply issues that not even food stamps provide enough help to maintain a healthy diet? What if the very safety net established by government begins to tear? Then what?
The majority will have no other option but to scrounge for food in the streets… or starve. We’re already seeing this across America and Europe as tens of millions of people struggle to adjust to a dead or dying consumptive paradigm. These people have not yet realized what has happened and they hold on to the hope that their political leaders will somehow change the inevitability of a disastrous outcome brought on by a system that has been overloaded with debt, overspending, irresponsibility and moral hazard.
Those, however, who have come to the realization that the economy is not rebounding, that jobs have either been vaporized or permanently outsourced, that things are going to get much worse before they have any chance of getting better, have begun taking steps to ensure that they’ll not only have larder for their families, but a source of income, however paltry.
As easy money made it possible for mass urbanization (and suburbanization) during the widespread global build-outs of the last two decades, the collapse of the lending system and credit in general over the last few years has forced many individuals in Europe and the United States to look at other options. In a scenario such as that in which we find ourselves today, where jobs are scarce, prices are high, and socialization becomes economically impossible to maintain, enlightened individuals are doing exactly the opposite of what they’ve been taught to do. They’re no longer heading to cities for high paying tech or finance jobs. They’re headed back to their ancestral roots – back to the rural countryside to try their hand at a different lifestyle.
As has been the case for the last few years, we can turn to Greece for an understanding of what’s to come, as they are a country that has taken the worst of the collapse so far, but one that is certainly not alone in the troubles being wrought on its people.

As he digs and gathers, he tells me his story.
“I worked as a sales representative for many years,” he explains.
“So many hours in the office, so many hours in my car. Many hours lost from my life.”
But those hours, those years of work did not end with happy retirement and a pension.
Instead, while still in his mid-40s, Aristotelis Loukas was made redundant.
Like so many others in Greece nowadays, perhaps 25% of the population, he found himself jobless, unable to find new work, and with a family to support.
But what Mr Loukas did have was an idea.
“I always wondered how it would be to be a farmer,” he says.
“Whatever happens with the economic crisis, the sky will still be blue.”

“We have had applications triple in just the past year,” says Dr Panos Kanellis, the Farm School’s president.
Many of those showing up have good degrees, even MBAs, but still cannot find a job in the Greece of today.
“I was shocked,” Dr Kanellis says.
“They wanted to know how they can use a piece of land that their grandfather owned in a village.
“They were trying to find an alternative.”

Certainly, he is aware of the changes demanded of him.
He laughs as he tells me how he used to be an athlete, but then got old and unfit: “Now in my forties, I have to re-make my body.”
He looks down at his somewhat rotund figure, and laughs again, a little nervously.
But in that laugh, there is mirth and optimism, as well as apprehension.
“When I look back at my life in the office, I think ‘that’s the past, now I have better things to do,’” he says.
“At least I don’t have thoughts on my mind about banks, about debts. I am okay with my family, and yes, I am happy.”

Very few of those living in the old paradigm of consumption, debt, and 40-hour work weeks will be able to maintain this lifestyle over the coming decade.
Nearly four years after the financial collapse of 2008 the majority of global economic indicators in America, Europe and China are suggesting that the situation has worsened, not moved into a recovery phase. What we’ve seen so far in terms of the vaporization of wealth, the destruction of jobs and the impoverishment of millions of once middle-class families is but the opening salvo in a world-wide depression that is sure to change the presumptions we have about global economic and geo-political stability.
This is only the beginning.
As such, we urge those who have yet to take steps to protect themselves, to prepare now for a massive paradigm shift that promises to be like nothing we’ve even seen in our lifetimes. It has been suggested that the next decade of human history will be plagued with riots, violence and bloodshed.
There is, of course, the chance that we’re totally off base and that world leaders and top banking financiers will figure a way out of this mess. But given what has transpired thus far, it would behoove us to look at the alternative as a real possibility.
That being said, we can take a hint from the Greeks to learn about trends that will be developing here in America. As the economy continues its tailspin we can assume that more people will lose their jobs (permanently), prices for essential goods in terms of real income value will continue to rise, already strained government social safety nets will unravel (and eventually collapse), and the people will be left to fend for themselves.
This means we need to start focusing on how to preserve our well being now. And that starts with ensuring you will have a roof over your head, food on the table, and skills that will allow you to maintain some level of income or units of exchange to acquire essential goods.
For those who have the means to do so, consider acquiring rural property at which you can build a shelter, micro farm and raise livestock. For those without such means, there are creative ways to produce your own food and create urban backyard sustainability.
At the very least, create a preparedness pantry that includes core food groups that can last a lifetime. In a scenario where you experience a job loss or extreme swings in food prices you’ll at least be able to fallback on your reserve supplies, or use them to supplement your diet if money and food supplies get tight.
One key takeaway from the experience of nouveau Greek farmers is that being skilled in land management, gardening, micro-farming, irrigation, raising livestock, and sustainability are fields of expertise that can be worth more than gold. Experts in these fields, or entrepreneurs that can manufacture tools and equipment, or operate (or rent) farm machinery (or beasts of burden), will find that they can build successful businesses from this rapidly developing trend.
Now is the time to prepare for the exodus from urbanized metropolitan areas and a return to the rural lifestyle of Green Acres.

Yesterday, I spoke with a gentleman in New York who tried to educate me on preparedness. He mentioned so many different concerns, many of which were legitimate and some were just out there. With so much going on in our Nation and throughout the world at large, it’s tough to ignore so much writing on the wall.

Now, let’s take that conversation into context for my focus of writing an article this morning: What if nothing happens? That’s exactly the question I’ll ask you. You, the prepared individual. You, the prepper who purchases food to have in the event your employment situation loses its revenue temporarily, or a minor movement of the earth closes local markets and grocers. You, the healthy student of nutrition. You, the responsible parent who works to provide the necessities of life for your children and grandchildren and works to secure those ongoing needs. You, the involved citizen who talks with your neighbors and cares about the safety of your neighborhood. You, the owner of a vehicle who pays auto insurance for security against an undesired vehicular event. You, the purchaser of health insurance for a family whose health is fundamental and essential. You, the ardent securer of water storage, just in case another 5-day boil-water-alert happens this month. You, the consumer who also produces constructively while others are socially-secure thanks to your payroll contributions. You, whose money is lent to banks whose bail-outs secured enormous pensions. You, whose income tax returns without interest.

What if not one thing happens this year to drastically- or even minimally- inconvenience your lifestyle?

In the event that your storage of food, water, medical, and other resources remains unmoved out of necessity, then count yourself fortunate. This is what we hope for, although we’d be willfully ignorant to discredit the vulnerabilities of our current environments, local and global!

If your application of primitive or pioneer skills finds use within recreational or standard homestead practices instead of emergent necessity, then continue enjoying their practice in peace. Please carry on and experience the following in your endeavors to be self-reliant:

• the joy of cultivating your plants and harvesting the literal fruits (& vegetables) of your labor
• the satisfaction of knowing basic skills to make many of the leisurely staples such as flour, pasta noodles, sausage, buttermilk, cheese, bread, and so much more
• the stewardship of slaughter & butchery
• the responsible care and maintenance of firearms and useful weapons/tools
• the autonomy of filtering and purifying water for all-things-related to its supply and use
• the comfort of attending to basic medical issues, affording you the avoidance of over-crowded emergency waiting rooms, and unnecessary exposure to other contagious pathogens
• the peace of mind that your food is not unnaturally grown and crammed into compact living conditions
• the security that comes with protection against a failing economy and currency, through precious metals
• the integrity of enjoying life’s experience as a perpetual learner, an ever-studious pupil
• the unmatched fulfillment which attends precious family moments of teaching, learning, and sharing
• the limitless advantages of perpetual personal progress

Natural disasters are going to happen as part of life. Adverse events are somewhat out of our control, so we prepare for those things which we can control: having something rather than having nothing. Knowing-by-doing rather than not knowing and doing nothing.

And if nothing happens, we have the satisfaction of having prepared for when it does.

Wildfires Cause Emergency Evacuations

Recent wildfires destroyed property and claimed lives.

The seasons and the weather are changing from region to region. The World Meteorological Organization reported that 2001-2011 was the hottest decade on record. The hot, dry conditions are creating a tinderbox that is ideal for out-of-control wildfires.
This is what happened to a small town near my home in South Central Utah. Thieves stole the copper grounding wire from a power substation, setting off a chain of events that turned deadly. Dry lightning hit the substation. Because the copper grounding wire was gone, the transformer short-circuited, causing it to spark, which set the dry grass on fire. The extremely hot, dry weather coupled with high winds took the fire up over the mountainous ridges and out of control. Left in its wake were entire subdivisions reduced to ashes. There were only minutes to get out as the inferno engulfed trailers, outbuildings, vehicles, SUVs, permanent residences and beautiful vacation homes.
The wildfires that recently ravaged Colorado left piles of rubble and ashes where beautiful homes stood before the flames engulfed the region, leaving more than 30,000 people homeless and destroying more than 300 homes. Some of the lucky people had less than 30 minutes to grab their most valuable possessions and flee the inferno. Others got out with only the clothes on their backs.
What would you do if you were told to evacuate your home now?
Towns were evacuated. Roads were closed. Power was shut off. Soon after the towns were evacuated they heard loud booms as home propane tanks exploded one by one. People were freaking out as they drove through smoke, pitch black with ash and slowly following everyone else in vehicles, trailers and cattle trucks.
Volunteers went house to house and let people know that they needed to get out now. One 72-year-old resident drove through about 50 feet of flames to evacuate. He said the fire was so hot that he could feel it on his face inside his car. It was something out of a horror movie. One person either did not get the word or refused to leave his home and he was found dead the next day. Many ranchers were airlifted out by helicopter while they watched their livestock succumb to the fire. Neighbors helped each other evacuate their sheep, horses and cattle. Many people tried to get their vehicles, trailers and SUVs out. They were just lucky to grab what they could and go. They felt extremely lucky to have made it out alive.
The Red Cross set up an evacuation site for refugees fleeing their homes. Many families were camping out, watching the fire and waiting to get the word to be able to get into their property. The interviews on the news were very sad because people did not have time to get their valuables, they just had to evacuate.
72-Hour Backpack
In this case, 72-hour backpacks or grab-and-go packs were absolutely critical. Things the residents needed the most were: money, face masks, a flashlight, a change of clothing, a sleeping bag, personal-hygiene items, medications, a cellphone, food and water.
The purpose of the 72-hour backpack is to help you survive an emergency that could take up to three days to get help. Evaluate the backpack to make sure you have everything you need for basic survival. If you have children, pack one for them also and keep it in a vehicle or near the front entrance to your house so you can quickly grab it and go. Backpacks should be kept up to date and accessable. Extra gasoline is important to grab if you are a long way from a gas station.
Solar Flashlight
The best flashlight I have found so far is the Hybrid Solar Flashlight. Less than 9 inches long and weighing only 7.5 ounces, this solar flashlight will provide 120 lumens of power on a full charge and will do so for six hours. It is waterproof, it floats, and it is incredibly durable. This flashlight can be recharged using any light source (the sun is best) but ambient or artificial light works too. There’s no need to ever buy or store batteries.
ION Stabilized Oxygen
I keep ION (stabilized oxygen) water treatment in my 72-hour pack just in case there is no potable water available. ION kills bacteria on contact from any water source.
Fire Protection And Prevention Tips
The Governor of Utah speaks out on fire prevention. He is urging people to use common sense and much caution while target shooting, lighting off fireworks and building campfires. Making sure that the campfires are built in approved parks and areas designated for fires. The State of Utah has restricted the use of any open flame as well as all fireworks for the entire summer. Colorado and many other States are following suit.
Many fire departments dedicate weeks to fire prevention and protection because it is so important to be aware of the things we can do to prevent fires and protect our loved ones from fire. Thousands of fires occur each year that could be prevented.
The most important fire prevention and fire protection tips are:

• Never allow children to play with matches, lighters or any other fire igniting apparatus. Keep these things in places where children cannot reach them, such as the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet.
• Place lit candles in areas where, if an accident happens, like the glass jar bursts, the fire will not be able to spread. Candles are the leading cause of accidental house fires.
• Check your fire extinguishers. It is important to know if your fire extinguishers are out of code. They may not work in a time when you need them.
• Test your doors and windows. It is important to know if they open easily, and whether your windows open wide or tall enough. If you have second-story windows, you will need emergency ladders in the room that can be hung out the window so you can climb down them.
• Make sure your smoke detectors work. Test them monthly and change the batteries right away if they do not work. This tip could help protect you and your loved ones by alerting you if there is smoke, and this can lead to protecting your home from a spreading fire.
• Have the electrical system of your house tested yearly; the chance of a fire happening because of an electrical system short is much greater in an older house.
• Always remember to turn off the stove when you are done cooking. Food left cooking on the stove can burn and cause a fire.
• Keep all space heaters away from flammable materials.

The most important thing about fire prevention is to take personal responsibility for your actions, be cautious and use common sense.

Note: White sugar is used in solution to feed the bacteria and yeast. It is said that most of this is used up in the fermentation process but that would depend on how long it is fermented. According to one herbalist, the sugar is broken down into fructose and sucrose. The sucrose is used up faster that the fructose. "What this dental procedure does to health is common among most dental procedures. That commonality is blood stasis. In the living tooth, a tooth whose root canal system is in tact, stasis locally begins when the outward flow of lymph from this system is inhibited. An instance of misdirected, or reversed, flow is when sugar is consumed. This reversal is temporary, however, provided the flow was fine before sugar consumption.
