Prepper tips and tricks: How to stay warm in winter using cayenne peppers

Thursday, November 03, 2022 by: Zoey Sky
    140VIEWS

(Natural News) Winter is just around the corner. It is important to keep your feet warm during cold season – especially if the circulation in your feet is a concern.
If you need help keeping your feet warm during winter, use an unusual but effective ingredient: cayenne peppers. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
You can buy cayenne salve, also called capsaicin salve or ointment, at the local pharmacy or supermarket. This product is used to relieve back and neck pain and it works by warming the muscles and loosening them up. (Related: Seven evidence-based medicinal properties of cayenne pepper.)
Cayenne salve can also be used to keep your feet warm. If you don’t want to spend money on cayenne salve, use the homemade pepper remedies detailed below to warm your feet during the cold winter months.
You can use any peppers that contain capsaicin, but be very careful when using peppers that are very high on the Scoville scale because they could burn your skin. This also means that peppers at the low end might not be hot enough to be effective.
Another option is to use hot peppers from your home garden. Dry them first using a dehydrator or an oven to remove all water, then use a grinder to turn the peppers into powder.
Things to remember before using cayenne pepper

Keep these tips in mind when using cayenne peppers to make home remedies:

    • Always wash your hands after touching hot peppers. Touching sensitive parts of your body like your eyes will cause an intense burning sensation.
    • Never use pepper if you have cuts or open wounds because it can burn you.
    • Cayenne pepper can stain your socks and your feet. If you’re going to put pepper in your socks, use an old pair that you don’t mind getting stains on.
    • Use cayenne sparingly at first since it can warm more than expected. Gradually increase the amount you use until you find the right amount for you.

Sprinkle cayenne powder on your feet

Looking for an easy and cheap way to use hot pepper to warm your feet? Sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper powder into your socks.
Just be careful not to use too much and spread it evenly over your feet. If it’s your first time using cayenne powder on your feet, test a tiny amount first to see if you are sensitive to peppers.
Once you’re used to the remedy, use more or less cayenne pepper powder depending on your sensitivity.
Limit the amount of pepper and get it evenly distributed by adding a small amount of pepper such as half a teaspoon into 1/4 cup of cornstarch or foot powder. Mix the ingredients well and add a teaspoon of the mixture to each sock. Move the sock around a bit to evenly distribute the powder.
Alternatively, you can shake the powder evenly onto your feet using a sifter or shaker jar. Sprinkle cayenne powder to keep your feet warm and dry on a cold, wet day or when working in the snow.
    Eat hot peppers

Eating hot peppers will also help warm up your entire body.
Hot peppers like cayenne contain an active ingredient called capsaicin and it makes your blood vessels dilate, which then makes extra blood flow and provides warmth to the hands and feet. You may feel the effect immediately, but other people feel the heat increase gradually.
As a bonus, eating hot peppers also helps add nutrients to your diet. Peppers contain beneficial vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds like potassium and magnesium, along with vitamins A, B6, C, E and K.
Try adding peppers to dishes to stay warm and healthy during winter.
Here are more ways to incorporate hot peppers into your regular diet:

    • Add a pinch of cayenne into hot chocolate for a warming beverage with a spicy kick. Hot chocolate with cayenne pepper is often enjoyed in Latin American countries. Add a dash of cinnamon or stir the hot chocolate with a cinnamon stick to complement the cayenne pepper.
    • Keep a shaker of cayenne pepper at the dining table and sprinkle cayenne on seafood like fish, lobsters, oysters, and shrimp.
    • Add cayenne to hot soups and stews.
    • Replace salt with cayenne to give dishes a flavor boost or as a low-sodium spice alternative.
    • Add cayenne pepper to egg dishes like breakfast souffles, omelets and egg salad.
    • Sprinkle cayenne pepper over tomatoes and other fresh vegetables when making a salad.
    • Add cayenne to meat marinades, especially for poultry and fish dishes.
    • Use cayenne to spice up hummus, guacamole and other dips.

    Make DIY cayenne pepper salve

Instead of buying commercially available salves with cayenne pepper, make some at home using only three ingredients. Cayenne pepper salve will warm your feet and help heal the skin, depending on what type of oils you add.
Some DIY cayenne pepper salve recipes call for a double boiler, but this recipe takes a shortcut by using a crockpot and a Mason jar for infusing the oil and melting the beeswax.
    Homemade cayenne pepper salve
    You will need:

    • 2 Tablespoons cayenne powder
    • 1/2 Cup olive oil or other carrier oil
    • 1/2 Ounce beeswax

    Preparation:

    1. Pour one to two inches of warm water in the bottom of the crockpot and set it on medium.
    2. Place the beeswax into a small heatproof jar and the olive oil in a second small jar. Use eight-ounce mason jars.
    3. Add the cayenne powder to the oil and mix it thoroughly.
    4. Place the oil and the pepper jar into the crockpot. Place the lid on loosely to keep condensation out of the jar. Put the lid on the crockpot and let it heat gently for four hours or infuse it on low overnight.
    5. Remove the lid and place the jar with the beeswax into the crockpot. Let the jar warm until the wax is melted.
    6. Remove the two jars from the crockpot, dry off the outsides and pour the oil through a cheesecloth or a strainer if you want to remove the pepper.
    7. Stir the infused oil into the wax slowly. Keep stirring until the wax and oil are completely mixed.
    8. Pour the salve into small jars or tin cans and let it cool. Label the salve containers and store them in a cool, dark place for future use.

Stay warm in cold weather by adding cayenne pepper powder to your socks or make a cayenne salve.

7 Brilliant Uses For Eggshells In Your Garden
    188764 SHARES

It’s no secret that eggs, full of protein, vitamins, and minerals (enough to grow a baby chicken from just one cell) are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.

Worldwide, an average person consumes about 150 to 200 eggs annually. That’s over a trillion eggs per year!
    Now ask yourself this:
“What happens to all of those eggshells?”

The shell of a chicken egg is comprised of about 96% calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals which are bound together by proteins.
Common commercial methods for disposing of eggshells include use as fertilizer or as a source of calcium in animal feed, but the average consumer typically drops them into the kitchen waste bin or down the garbage disposal.

If you are among this group, please read on to discover six creative uses for eggshells that will benefit your garden.
How To Prepare Eggshells For Use In The Garden

It’s not simply a case of plopping the egg yolk and white into the dish you are preparing and then tossing the eggshell in the garden – but it’s not much more difficult than that.
Once you have your empty eggshell, give it a good wash with cool running water. Make sure it’s clean and free of any egg residue and place in an open container in your kitchen to dry. You could move it outside on sunny days to dry quicker.

Contrary to popular belief, the shells will not smell at all.
Once completely dry and you’ve built up a significant stockpile, pulverize into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon or mallet.
If you prefer even smaller pieces, use a pestle and mortar to grind up into a fine powder.

Now you are ready to use your eggshells in the garden.
    1. Fertilizer

Eggshells are a great way to add calcium to your soil.
You can simply toss your eggshells onto your soil without problem, but eggshells can take a long time to break down so you may want to crush your shells first.
It may also be wise to wash out your shells first to remove any egg residue and reduce the risk of unwanted pests sniffing out your soil.

Alternately, you can incorporate crumbled eggshell directly into the bottoms of your planting holes in the spring.
While calcium is considered a secondary nutrient for plants, your garden will certainly appreciate the added minerals, especially if you grow tomatoes or peppers as these plants are the most easily affected by calcium-deficiency.

Eggshells in tomato planting holes can be a particularly effective way to reduce the risk of blossom end rot – a common tomato plant issue.
During the winter months, distribute your shells over the plot of land where you will plant come springtime. Once the ground warms up, you can till the shells into the soil.
If you are adverse to the idea of having eggshells on the ground all winter, you can also clean and store the shells until planting season rolls around.

While calcium is considered a secondary nutrient for plants, your garden will certainly appreciate the added minerals, especially if you grow tomatoes or peppers as these plants are the most easily affected by calcium-deficiency.

    2. Pest-Deterrent

If you have problems with slugs and snails in your garden, try sprinkling coarsely-crumbled eggshells around the plants where these slimy little pests like to dine.

The shells’ sharp edges deter snails and slugs by abrading the sensitive foot of any land mollusc that attempts to cross the barrier. Most snails and slugs will quickly emigrate from your garden in search of easier pickings.
    3. Seed-starter Pots

Because eggshells quickly biodegrade when introduced into soil in the garden, they also double as the perfect seed-starter pots.
When you open your eggs to remove the contents, try to break just a small hole at the pointier end of the shell. Clean the inside of the eggshells (boiling water works well for this) and puncture a small drainage hole in the bottom of each empty shell.
You can then place them back into the carton, fill each shell with moist potting soil, and add your seeds.
Once the seedlings outgrow their “pots” you can transplant them shell and all directly into bigger pots or out into the garden.

    4. Feed the Birds

Both before and after laying eggs, mother birds need more calcium in their diets.
Sterilize your eggshells by baking them at 250°F / 120°C for about ten minutes so the shells are dry, but not brown on the inside. Then crumble your eggshells well and place them outdoors (in a feeder or even just on the ground) during the spring and summer.
You can also mix the eggshell crumbles with birdseed, suet, or mealworms in an existing bird feeder.

Either way, your healthy mama birds just might thank you by also dining on insect pests that may otherwise damage your garden.
    5. Repel Deer

If you have deer visiting your garden as if were their own personal buffet every night, scatter some eggshells around the plants they’re munching on the most.
Deer hate the smell of albumin and tend to stay away from an area that smells like raw eggs.
Just be careful using this method as the smell may actually attract smaller vermin like rodents who like to eat eggs.
    6. Aesthetic Value

Finely-ground eggshells can also be quite pretty.
If you have a large family or simply eat a lot of eggs, boil your shells to sterilize them, crumble, then drop them into a large glass jar for storage.
Once you’ve collected enough shell crumbles, sprinkle them around and in between your plants. Not only will the eggshells help control pests and eventually add calcium back to the soil, the white color can also be a beautiful accent to your garden.

Add crumbled oyster shells for an even more interesting appearance with all of the same garden health benefits.
    7. Compost

There is much debate about adding eggshells to compost, but eggshells are a perfectly safe and beneficial addition to your compost bin or heap.
Eggshells are very slow to break down and so should be washed (to remove any egg residue that may attract unwanted critters), dried and crushed into smaller pieces. The eggshells will likely still be visible in the final compost but will not harm the finished product.

If the other garden uses for eggshells aren’t for you, then composting them is a simple way to return nutrients to the soil.
With these seven garden uses for eggshells under your belt, now both you and your garden can enjoy the health benefits of nature’s perfect food – the egg.
