TSA Creator Agrees with Ron Paul About Abolishing TSA

Wrote Audrey Hudson in September at Human Events:

a decade after the TSA was created following the September 11 attacks, the author of the legislation that established the massive agency grades its performance at “D-.”
“The whole program has been hijacked by bureaucrats,” said Rep. John Mica (R. -Fla.), chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
“It mushroomed into an army,” Mica said. “It’s gone from a couple-billion-dollar enterprise to close to $9 billion.”
As for keeping the American public safe, Mica says, “They’ve failed to actually detect any threat in 10 years.”
“Everything they have done has been reactive. They take shoes off because of [shoe-bomber] Richard Reid, passengers are patted down because of the diaper bomber, and you can’t pack liquids because the British uncovered a plot using liquids,” Mica said.
“It’s an agency that is always one step out of step,” Mica said.
It cost $1 billion just to train workers, which now number more than 62,000, and “they actually trained more workers than they have on the job,” Mica said.
“The whole thing is a complete fiasco,” Mica said.
In a wide-ranging interview with HUMAN EVENTS just days before the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Mica said screeners should be privatized and the agency dismantled…
Asked whether the agency should be privatized, Mica answered with a qualified yes.
“They need to get out of the screening business and back into security. Most of the screening they do should be abandoned,” Mica said. “I just don’t have a lot of faith at this point,” Mica said…
“We are one of the only countries still using this model of security,” Mica said, “other than Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, and I think, Libya.”

Ron Paul Campaign Statement Concerning TSA Abuses

The TSA “gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities…while doing nothing to keep us safe.”

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign released the following statement concerning TSA abuses like the ones that resulted in U.S. Sen. Rand Paul being inconvenienced at the Nashville, Tennessee airport. Below please find comments from Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX):
“The police state in this country is growing out of control. One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities. The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe.
“That is why my ‘Plan to Restore America,’ in additional to cutting $1 trillion dollars in federal spending in one year, eliminates the TSA.
“We must restore the freedom and respect for liberty that once made American the greatest nation in human history. I am deeply committed to doing that as President of the United States.”

Gingrich Supported Goldwater? Newt Helped Reagan End the Cold War?

    Said Newt Gingrich tonight:

“I went to a Goldwater organizing session in 1964. I met with Ronald Reagan for the first time in 1974. I worked with Jack Kemp, and Art Laffer and others to develop supply side economics in the late ’70s. I helped Governor Reagan become President Reagan. I helped pass the Reagan economic program and worked with the National Security Council on issues including the collapse of the Soviet Empire…”
    Said Gingrich before:

On Reagan’s decision to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev, Salon’s Glenn Greenwald notes:
“Newt Gingrich… denounced President Reagan’s rapprochement with Gorbachev in 1985 as potentially “the most dangerous summit for the West since Adolf Hitler met with Chamberlain in 1938 at Munich.”

Ron Paul Commands a Strong Plurality of Hispanic Republican Voters in Florida

Garners a notable 41.5 percent of Sunshine State Hispanic Republicans who will vote in the primary
KISSIMMEE, Florida – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul wins a strong plurality of Hispanic voters in the early voting state of Florida, according to a new poll. Paul earns a commanding 41.5 percent among this large voting segment, with Newt Gingrich a distant second with 25.3 percent. Mitt Romney in third place and Rick Santorum in fourth place fare quite poorly, garnering just 9.2 and 4.1 percent, respectively, in the survey of registered Republican voters who respond that they will vote in the Tuesday, January 31st primary.
Among the total voters sampled, Paul is in third place with 13.1 percent in the state, ahead of Santorum with 10.7 percent, remarkable considering the Paul campaign is pursuing a longer-term delegate-accumulation strategy in lieu of the Sunshine State nominating contest.
“Ron Paul’s support among Hispanic Republicans makes sense since Hispanics desire the same reforms that their non-Hispanic counterparts want—strong purchasing power for their hard-earned dollars, a regulatory climate hospitable to business and job growth, and personal and economic liberties returned so decision-making on important life matters occurs in the home and not in Washington,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.
“These numbers bode well for Dr. Paul. We’ve got a lengthy, 50-state national campaign ahead of us and Hispanic voters will play a part in the Republican nominating contest and in the general election,” added Mr. Benton, referring to the 12-term Congressman from Texas as “doctor” because Paul is by trade an OB/GYN who personally delivered more than 4,000 babies.
The Florida poll comes on the heels of news that Paul defeats incumbent President Barack Obama 49 to 45 percent in a general election matchup, according to a CNN/ORC Poll. Paul also bests all other Republican candidates among nonwhite voters when matched against Obama in the CNN/ORC poll, carrying a solid quarter of those votes, and defeating Obama among white voters 54 to 41 percent, and men 49 to 44 percent.
InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research conducted the Florida poll of 557 registered Republican voters for Newsmax on Sunday. For the full poll results, please click here.

Ron Paul Defines Conservatism at Tonight’s Debate

The last question asked by the NBC moderators tonight was about how each of the candidates have advanced conservatism. Mitt Romney talked about his business experience. Newt Gingrich attempted to align himself with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Rick Santorum did a good job in explaining how Mitt and Newt’s support for individual healthcare mandates, TARP and cap-and-trade calls into question both men’s conservative credentials.
Ron Paul pointed out that conservatism is supposed to mean smaller government and more liberty. Paul then suggested that Republicans have completely lost sight of this definition. He’s right.
Romney, Gingrich and Santorum’s records are all riddled with support for bigger government (Santorum’s own offenses include supporting Medicare Plan D and No Child Left Behind, for starters) and all three have been willing to sacrifice constitutional liberties in the name of “security.” The Patriot Act, support for indefinite detention and other anti-4th Amendment measures are prime examples, but so are the amount of money every candidate but Paul is willing to spend overseas in the name of “security.”
The reason the other candidates can’t find big government offenses in Paul’s record is because their aren’t any. The reason the other candidates can’t offer any spending cuts–much less the $1 trillion Paul offers–is because they’ve resigned themselves to the idea that America’s foreign policy status quo must remain intact. No questions. No reassessment. No cost/benefit analyses. All but Paul want more of the same.
Every candidate except Paul offers zero cuts. Every candidate except Paul consistently gives up more of our constitutional liberties.
If conservatism truly means smaller government and more liberty, then only one conservative stood on that debate stage tonight.
