An immigration enforcement activist hopes the Republican leadership in Congress will stand firm in resisting efforts by Democrats to include amnesty in tax reform or budget bills.
Last week, House Speaker Paul Ryan declared that Democrats squandered their chance to demand a so-called "DACA fix" that would address the shielding of young undocumented immigrants from deportation, as part of the year-end spending bill. This came after Democrat leaders failed to show up for a meeting with President Trump to negotiate the legislation.
The House Speaker also rejected the Democrats' demand for granting citizenship to DACA illegal aliens by the end of the year. Ryan argued that the six-month phase-out of the Obama-era deportation amnesty runs out in March, so lawmakers have until then to figure out what to do.
William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, says his organization doesn't think Congress should rush to get spending and tax bills passed this year, "unless there are protections for Americans and American tax dollars from exploitation by illegal immigrants."
Gheen explains why the GOP should avoid adding amnesty to the current tax reform legislation.
"If we can stop them from passing amnesty [as they intend to this month], once the elections begin in 2018, that will stop the amnesty legislation consideration," he says, "because these lawmakers know that most of their constituents back home oppose it – and they will fear losing their seats."
He cited as examples three former GOP lawmakers who suffered that fate: Rep. Eric Cantor (Virginia), Rep. Renee Ellmers (North Carolina), and Sen. Luther Strange (Alabama).
Democrats have threatened a partial government shutdown if they don't get their way on DACA. Gheen hopes the GOP leadership won't cave as they have in the past.
