9-Year-Old Girl Killed at Crosswalk by Illegal in Boise

Police are investigating a crash that killed a young girl on Tuesday afternoon in Boise, Idaho, involving an illegal.

According to the City of Boise, police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash at an intersection. The victim, a nine-year-old girl, was rushed to a local hospital,mb where she succumbed to her injuries.

“A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a pickup truck was traveling west on Ada St. and stopped at a stop sign at Harrison Blvd. The pedestrian, also traveling west on Ada, had stopped on the sidewalk on the northeast corner of the intersection.”

“Traffic was backed up on Harrison, and the collision occurred when both the driver and the pedestrian entered the intersection with the driver attempting to turn right to head north on Harrison.”

During a standard records check of NCIC (National Crime and Information Center) it was determined that the driver involved in the crash, Elvin Ramos-Caballero, was on scene and cooperated with the investigation had an outstanding federal warrant involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Because of the warrant, officers contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who responded and took custody of Ramos-Caballero.

Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts sent the following message about student safety, according to CBS 2:

As many of you are aware, our community experienced a tragic incident last night in which a Washington Elementary School student lost their life after being struck by a vehicle. Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire Washington community during this incredibly difficult time.

In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of the shared responsibility we all hold in keeping students safe—whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus, or traveling in any way on our city’s streets.

Our Crisis Team is supporting the Washington Elementary community, and counselors will continue to be available for students, staff, or families who may be struggling. If you or someone you know needs support, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school.

Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison added, “This is a parent’s worst nightmare, and tonight our hearts go out to the victim’s family, friends, and her community at large. Boise Police will release additional information as the investigation develops.”

Coroner identifies 8-year-old girl hit by pickup in Boise’s North End

The Ada County Coroner’s Office on Thursday released the identity of a girl who was fatally struck by a pickup truck at an intersection in Boise’s North End neighborhood on Tuesday. Mora Gerety, 8, was a student at Washington Elementary School, which is located not far from where she was trying to cross Harrison Boulevard at the intersection with Ada Street just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the coroner’s report, Mora died a couple of hours after the accident, at about 6:55 p.m. at St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center. The coroner ruled the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries.

In its original notification about the incident, the Boise Police Department stated that at the scene, the girl had what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. The coroner’s office said she was pronounced dead in an operating room at St. Luke’s.

According to BPD, Mora and the driver of the pickup were both going west on Ada Street when they stopped at the intersection with Harrison Boulevard. She and the truck both entered the intersection, and as the vehicle was turning right onto Harrison, it hit her. After the incident, Harrison Boulevard was closed as police investigated.

The Boise School District sent out an email saying that it was providing resources to the school community, with counselors available to students, staff and families.

“In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of the shared responsibility we all hold in keeping students safe — whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus, or traveling in any way on our city’s streets,” the email read.

Community members have also put up a memorial for the girl with flowers, ribbons and notes at the intersection of Harrison and Ada Street.

The day after the accident, community members wrapped trees and the street sign with flowers, ribbons, stuffed animals and cards.

The man driving the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. After running a standard records check, police said in a news release Wednesday that they found the man had a federal warrant with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Boise police contacted ICE, and agents took him into custody. He is being held at the Elmore County Jail, according to online ICE records.

There is no marked crosswalk at the Ada and Harrison intersection. Idaho law states that motorists must yield to pedestrians at intersections, regardless of whether a crossing is marked or unmarked. Boise police have said the investigation is ongoing; the driver has not been charged with any crime related to the accident.
