Jose Luis Gonzalez Dominguez, 21, another live in boyfriend of another careless mother. Crystal Carimbocas, mother of at least three children (possibly more), allowed her illegal immigrant boyfriend from Mexico City to move in with her a year ago. Immediately, he began a campaign of abuse against her children, but particularly her 4 year old daughter, Anays.

Police had been called to the Carimbocas home on a couple of occasions leading up to the culminating call on or about May 16. The first occasion was in July 2010, when Crystal's own mother called police to report that Jose had punched an older daughter, all of 6 years old, in the face. Crystal coached her children to lie and they dutifully backed up her story that the bruise on the girl's face was the result of a thrown toy.

In September, another call to police because Anays had "a black eye, a broken blood vessel in her left ear, and a hematoma on her scalp." Crystal and her children told the police that Anays had fallen against a table while playing. A doctor heard the story upon examining Anays, seemed doubtful as to its veracity but basically said "maybe".

Around rolls May 17, 2011, and Jose has been minding the kids all day. Crystal comes home late and finds her daughter Anays "pale, weak, and breathing shallowly". She considers what to do and 30 minutes later calls 911. Anays did not even make it to the hospital.

Anays had a skull fracture, a lacerated liver, bruises all over her body, and upon autopsy was found to have 14 broken ribs, some healing, some calcified, and a broken pelvis, also healing.

Jose had tried to explain to the police that her immediate injuries occurred at the apartment complex's community pool that day. He said she fell. The injuries were the result, of course, of more than a single fall. Further, the pool had not been open that day and surveillance tapes did not show the family at the pool.

The police interviewed the children again. They indicated that Jose had been beating Anays almost from the time he moved in. Daily. The most pitiful part of this story in my heart is this line: "[The daughter] told police that Anays asked her mother to call police about the beatings, but she [sic] mother refused." A four year old. Begged. Her mother. To call the police. A four year old.
