He should have been tried as an adult and charged with vehicular manslaughter. Who ever gave him the booze should be charged too.

Teen in fatal DUI crash to be deported after year in custody

A drunken teenager who killed a man in a hit-and-run collision will serve a year in custody and then be deported when he's released, according to a Juvenile Court disposition announced Monday.

The 17-year-old, whose name was not released because of his age, was accused in the Oct. 10 death of Aman Khanna, 58.

The teenager's car had been clocked at 80 miles per hour when it ran a red light and smashed broadside into Khanna's vehicle, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said in a press release. The youth then fled the scene of the crash.

Khanna, an immigrant from India, was on his way to work at the time of the 10 p.m. collision. Khanna worked two security guard jobs to support his wife, his mother and his three daughters.

Deputy District Attorney Joy Smiley said that the death has left Khanna's family emotionally despondent and economically devastated.

"The criminal act of this minor has caused severe emotional and financial distress for the victim's family," Smiley said in a statement. "They not only continue to grieve the loss of their beloved husband and father, their finances have been depleted, and they are left with no way to support themselves."

Robert Sugar, an associate chemical testing engineer at a state Transportation Department facility on Folsom Boulevard where Khanna worked during the day, said the victim was very highly regarded by everyone who knew him.

"He was always polite, he was always helpful," Sugar said Monday. "He was just a model employee, really. The man was just first-rate in everything he did. I'd see him when he would do his rounds in the evening. He was always punctual, always on time.

"Everybody truly regretted his loss," Sugar said.

Khanna's family said after his death that he would come home to his North Natomas residence to get some rest after completing a full day's work before rising again to put in another eight hours on the graveyard shift at Kaiser Hospital on Morse Avenue.

He was on his way to the second job when the teenager sped through the intersection at Fulton and Cottage and slammed into Khanna's car.

Juvenile Court Referee Carol Chrisman committed the youth Monday to the Sacramento County Boys Ranch for the year.

After the juvenile has served that time, he will be deported to Mexico, where his parents live, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The press and public were barred from the teen's Juvenile Court proceedings because the petition filed against him did not contain charges that would qualify the matter for open hearings, court officials said at the time of his detention hearing in October.

**Note, the killer's parents live in Mexico, and after he killed this man, he fled on foot without checking on him.

Sentence didn't fit the crime. The Oct. 10 collision killed Aman Khanna, who was on his way to work in one of two jobs he held.
