LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man who was in the country illegally when he allegedly struck and killed two young girls while driving drunk was already under investigation by federal authorities at the time of the crash.

Juan Ortega-Santos was in court Monday, two months after the crash that killed 16-year-old Tyeisha Lacy and 10-year-old Alena Clay.

The girls were with two other friends on Taylorsville Road when the crash took place. They told investigators that Ortega-Santos stopped, looked back and then drove back.

Ortega-Santos, however, told police afterward that he didn't realize he'd hit something.
