DENHAM SPRINGS, La. – The family of
15-year-old Kendan “Big Jody” Saplut is asking for the community’s support following his tragic death after being struck by a suspected drunk driver.

The crash occurred on the evening of August 21 along Magnolia Boulevard near Whiteleaf Street. According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Saplut was riding his bicycle when he was hit. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries on August 22.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old
Juan Alfredo Chavarria Lezama, was arrested at the scene and booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Authorities say his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He is facing multiple charges, including:


  • Vehicular Homicide
  • DWI (1st Offense)
  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
  • No Driver’s License


  • ICE Detainer

In the wake of the tragedy, Saplut’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and honor his memory. The fundraiser describes Kendan as “full of life, laughter, and love,” and notes that “his kindness touched everyone who knew him.”“His passing has left a hole in the hearts of his family, friends, and community that can never be filled,” the family wrote.

Kendan, affectionately known as “Big Jody,” is remembered for his joyful spirit and big heart. His death has left a lasting impact on those who knew and loved him.
