Medellin execution put on hold
06:06 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Associated Press
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The scheduled execution of Jose Medellin in Texas is on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court considers an appeal in his case. The death warrant, which allowed the lethal injection to be carried out after 6 p.m., remains in effect until midnight.
KHOU - TV
Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman were killed in 1993.
Medellin faces lethal injection tonight over the June 1993 rape and torture killings of two girls in Houston who stumbled upon a gang initiation.
The victims were 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena and 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman.
Medellin’s execution, which would be the fifth this year in Texas, has attracted international attention.
KHOU
Medellin was sentenced to death for raping and murdering Jennifer Ertman, 14, and Elizabeth Pena, 16.
The inmate raised claims that he wasn’t allowed to consult the Mexican consulate for legal help after he was arrested.
Governor Rick Perry and Texas courts say the execution should go forward and that Medellin has had multiple legal reviews.
State officials noted Medellin never invoked his Mexican consular rights until four years after he was convicted of capital murder.

Didn't the supreme court already rule on this?....this is bad news, if the world court succeeds it will set a precedent for overruling our supreme court!
I was afraid this would happen at the last minute. Texas is rethinking or they would have went through with it.Please support ALIPAC's fight to save American Jobs & Lives from illegal immigration by joining our free Activists E-Mail Alerts (CLICK HERE)

I think this is to show that a good effort was made to look over the information again, it's on hold til midnight. Texas had BETTER go through with it or face a HUGE backlash from Americans.
Where were the protesters when Derrick O'Brien was executed two years ago? Oh I forgot, he wasn't hispanic, he was a black man!!!!

Good grief!!!
Travesty in the Making
KHOU-TV is reporting that murderer Jose Medellin is still alive pending yet another Supreme Court review.
The scheduled execution of Jose Medellin in Texas is on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court considers an appeal in his case. The death warrant, which allowed the lethal injection to be carried out after 6 p.m., remains in effect until midnight.
Unbelievable.
Lord, please take this murderer out of this world today, as he has had his chance to find governmental/political loopholes for 15 years. Give these girls' families some peace and justice today.

Don't mean to take over this board, but we're getting conflicting info here.
According to KERA PBS, the execution is on for later tonight.
Mexican born Texas death row inmate Jose Medellin is scheduled for execution tonight, for the rape & murder of two teenage girls in 1993. His lawyers say there's an international argument for a stay.
Medellin's attorneys say their client was not allowed to talk with a Mexican consulate after his arrest. The Bush administration - even the Supreme Court - says he had that right, according to an international treaty. Attorney spokesperson Katherine Huffman says that obligation wasn't complied with and a stay of execution's in order.
Huffman: If we're not perceived as nation that abides by rule of law & abides by promises then that changes our ability to work with international partners. If we don't comply with our treaty obligations then there's no reason for our partners to comply with theirs.
Texas Governor Rick Perry says Medellin's rights were not denied.
Texas officials have already considered Medellin's case and ok'd tonight's execution. The flag flies at half-mast out of grief for the death of my beautiful, formerly-free America. May God have mercy on your souls.

Illegal Alien
It appears that the executioner is awaiting the go ahead of the Supreme Court. I previously thought that the execution would go ahead UNLESS the Supreme Court intervened.
This is troubling. The Supreme Court already issued a ruling saying Texas was not bond by the international court. Why are we waiting. It has been 15 years. Justice is overdue.
The death warrant is good til midnight. If Texas does not get an order from the court, I would expect that the sentence be carried out.
Now we just wait.
