CADILLAC, MI - It was 14 years ago this week that a West Michigan farmboy and U-M athlete who grew up to be a U.S. park ranger was gunned down in Arizona by members of a drug cartel who had crossed the border from Mexico.

In the time since Kris Eggle's death, some things have changed. The visitor center at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument now bears the name of the 28-year-old, and has shared his legacy for many years. Eggle's sister, Jennifer, works for the park service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Empire, where her brother once walked the trails in his early years as a ranger.
