N.J.: Sweeney right on illegal aliens

    Published: Monday, March 10, 2008

    Sweeney right
    on illegal aliens

I strongly disagree with your Feb. 22 editorial, "Hiring illegal aliens/Not a state issue," regarding Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney's proposed legislation calling for the suspension of the business licenses of those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

You accuse Sweeney, D-Salem, Cumberland, Gloucester, of pandering, but he is responding to the will of his constituency. Overwhelmingly, American citizens have made it clear that they want something done about the invasion that is taking place along our southern borders, where towns are being literally overrun and the quality of life destroyed. The cost to taxpayers is in the billions of dollars at a time when states and municipalities are struggling to balance budgets.

Your rationale is that this has been going on for 20 years and is hard to enforce because of fraudulent IDs - which is exactly why we have reached a crisis, and the people are fed up.

As to your talking point that Americans don't want to pick tomatoes or mow lawns, you are obviously either less than truthful or naive. Illegals are taking jobs in construction, restaurants, truck driving; they are displacing American citizens and driving down wages. Go out into any neighborhood in New Jersey, and you will find people who were displaced by the influx of cheap labor. Jobs that pay a living wage for the working class are disappearing as a result.
Kudos to Sweeney for his efforts. Perhaps his bill will induce other agencies to do their jobs.

I agree. Illegal immigration has to stop in New Jersey. Keep up the good work Sweeney!
