Alabama educators in need of a civics refresher course.

Alabama educators in need of a civics refresher course.

Alabama H.B.56 requires schools to collect data and report to the State where a child was born. Section 28 of the law is designed to give state legislators a general estimate and idea what it is costing Alabama taxpayers to educate the children of illegal aliens. As a taxpayer, this sounds immensely fair and reasonable.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates the national costs at nearly $52 billion per year. Stand With Arizona puts the total costs of illegal immigration for Alabama at $298 million. The "free" education illegal aliens are receiving isn't so free after all. Alabama State Senator Beason is absolutley correct the taxpayers of Alabama deserve to know the facts.

It's a shame that many state educators feel burdened by the very thought of having to comply with the laws of the State of Alabama. They are using disinformation and scare tactics to blur the true intent of H.B. 56.

Larry DiCharia, Superintendent of Phenix City Schools called the sensible requirement "impracticable, if not unconstitutional." Lee County, Al School Superintendent Dr. Stephen Nowlin speaking on H.B. 56 declared to The Opelika-Auburn News: "We are not going to be in the business of being immigration police." Auburn, AL Superintendent Dr. Terry Jenkins told the O-A News's "It's going to affect us in student enrollment, and it will affect us with employees because we'll have to use the E-Verify and go through all that." It would seem those we have entrusted with overseeing our childrens education and safety need a civics lesson.

Auburn University graduate and Mexican National Guillermo Brito Quiroz told the O-A News that; "A lot of people are going to try to go out and move to another state like North Carolina or Tennessee. Right now, it seems like it's going to be a kind of chain reaction." Hello, it's called attrition through enforcement and would be considered 'Mission Accomplished.'

The 1982 Supreme Court decision Plyler v. Doe prohibited states from denying K-12 schooling to the children of illegal aliens. This unjust burden is passed on to the already overburdened taxpayer. FAIR's 2005 publication; "Breaking the Piggy Bank; How Illegal Immigration is Sending Schools Into the Red" breaks down the estimated costs state by state.

They estimate the economic drain on Alabama taxpayers at $34 million for illegal alien students and $48 million for their U.S. born siblings. In the State of Georgia it's a little more grim with $397 million for illegal alien students and $555 million for their U.S. born siblings. These estimates don't include Limited English Proficiency instruction. Just think about how much better our education system would be, if this money was spent to educate our children.

Just a few more examples of the true costs of illegal immigration. Taxpayers are being fleeced of $113 billion annually. A subject convenientlt ignored by Congress in the recent debt ceiling debates.

In the 159 page response; Alabama lays it down simple: " There is little in the way of hard facts based on personal knowledge. Instead, they present hearsay, legal opinion, speculation, and even speculation about other people's speculation."

We must stand in support of Alabama and her leadership. It's not going to be easy, but she's worth it. The criminal alien pandering Obama Administration in an effort to undermine the successes of AZ S.B. 1070, GA S.B. 87, and AL H.B. 56 has bypassed Congress to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. The DREAM Act which couldn't make it through Congress is being treated as if it were law. The President is trampling the Constitution and the will of the people of Alabama in doing this. Alabamians need to be very vocal on this issue: White House comment line:1-202-456-1111 and fax line:1-202-456-2461. Let your voice be heard in the halls of power.
