New Bush administration immigration regulations hurts workers
Last December the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill making it a felony to be an undocumented worker. Right now the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is proposing new rules that could have disastrous effects for all workers and our economy.

Under the new rules, employers could be held liable for violating immigration law if they continue to employ workers who are notified the Social Security numbers they provide employers does not match what the Social Security Administration has on record. This may prompt panicked employers to fire thousands of workers before they have a chance to resolve discrepancies.

If this rule is imposed, workers who are in this country legally can be fired and barred from further employment.

Enforcing our immigration laws using such a notoriously error-prone system will only worsen conditions for all workers and stand in the way of true comprehensive reform in Congress. That reform includes the historic bipartisan AgJobs bill negotiated by the United Farm Workers and the nation’s agricultural industry. AgJobs would let immigrant farm workers earn the right to stay in this country by continuing to work in the fields.

We have time to fight back. Tell President Bush’s Department of Homeland Security to reject these new proposed regulations that hurt everyone and let Congress reach a comprehensive immigration solution.
