    Government of the People, by the People and for the People has become only an idea whose time apparently has passed. Our elitist, out-of-touch Congress and Senate and president are hell-bent on destroying the United States of America regardless of what the citizens want. We are irrelevant in the plans ---- just a mere annoyance.

    The amnesty deal is nothing short of an outright abomination forced on our country by elitist, evil globalists feeding the voracious appetites of huge corporations and multimillionaire politicians who would sell out our heritage, our values, the security of our families and our very children's future for a buck.

    We don't need so-called comprehensive immigration reform. We need enforcement of our existing laws and closing the borders! Our national sovereignty trumps all other concerns. President Reagan and our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves at the treasonous actions of elitists who should have been thrown out of office decades ago.

    From a local government perspective, I can't help but feel that all the enduring of boycotts and egging of my business, all the rocks thrown at my vehicle, the "racist" attacks and posters with my photo on them and all our City Council's attempts to combat illegal immigration on the home front have all been in vain because our own government is fighting against us. Our health, economy, security, values, heritage, culture, language, neighborhoods are under full attack. Any hope we have of controlling overcrowding, improving health care and education goes down the drain. The Constitution has been outrightly ignored and our hard-won liberty is under attack.

    The United States of America will cease to be a sovereign nation after an affirmative vote. The elitists know their new plan is not enforceable and they don't care. This is one step toward the North American Union and free open borders. It's not about what is good for America, but what is good for them and their big money supporters. What are you called to do on behalf of your children? On behalf of all our veterans who have fought and died for our great nation? On behalf of our brave military in harm's way today? Are we going to wring our hands or are we going to act?

    If there was ever a time in our history for every American to stand up and be counted, this is it. If you have never called, faxed or e-mailed your senator or congressman ---- do it now!

    No matter what your political party, if your representative has abandoned our American laws and votes for amnesty, we must abandon them and switch to a new or better political party. We have taxation without representation! It is too long to wait until the 2008 elections. They must be removed from office now.

    President Lincoln, in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg, said "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain ---- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom ---- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

    Now it's our time to stand and be counted. May God bless America.

    I was reading the few negative comments on this commentary, by JOHN, MARK, AND LUKE, and then I realized that they forgot MATTHEW. LOL Is it just me or is anyone else here offended at the Catholic Church Support of Illegal Aliens. I believe that the Catholic Church should loose their Tax Exempt Status.

    Waldron often sits in the middle of controversy

    ESCONDIDO -- Councilwoman Marie Waldron is no stranger to controversial issues. Often, she is at the center of them.

    During her eight years on the dais, the 46-year-old, who is seeking a third term this fall, has decried nudist activities in the city, filter-free computers at the library and fluoridation of the city's water supply.

    She and a council majority resisted plans by Palomar Pomerado Health to build a $690 million medical campus in a high-tech business park, before eventually accepting the district's decision in exchange for additional road improvements.


    Then there's illegal immigration.

    In May 2005, she cried foul when the Mexican consulate set up services at the city's annual Civic Faire. Four months later, she asked her colleagues to support a state border police initiative that ultimately failed to get enough signatures to make it on the ballot.

    And in recent months, her push to crack down on illegal immigration in Escondido has culminated in an ordinance that prohibits landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. The ban, which passed by a 3-2 margin, heads back to the council for final approval this week.

    In all these matters, Waldron said she doesn't see what all the fuss is about.

    "I stand for values," said Waldron who is among seven candidates for two council seats. "And sometimes, those things are deemed controversial by some people. But to me, that's who I am."

    Critics, including outgoing Councilman Ron Newman and many of Waldron's challengers in the council race, have called the rental ban a political ploy that has "hijacked" the election and is "using the city's Latino population as pawns."

    Waldron, however, rejects those criticisms and the notion that Nov. 7 will become a referendum on her efforts to tackle illegal immigration. She points out that most of her participation in discussions and votes on the dais have been over more mundane matters, such as road improvements and other development issues. Those types of decisions, along with the council's push to bring in a Marriott hotel, should be what voters base their decision on, she said.

    "As I've been on the council, I've been able to really change the direction of the city to be pro-business," said Waldron, who owns a T-shirt printing company downtown with her husband. "Because prior to my sitting in the seat, the city had been driving away business."

    Waldron said that, if elected, she intends to continue the city on its current course, working to lure more residential and office development into the downtown area.

    In many ways, Waldron has enjoyed the best of both worlds. Her stance on development and efforts to bring residential and office projects downtown has earned her a reputation as being pro-business, and she is endorsed by the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, as well as the city's police and fire departments.

    At the same time, her tough-on-immigration stance has brought her considerable support and attention from the San Diego Minutemen, who endorsed her failed bid for State Assembly this summer, including making campaign appearances with her.

    The group has continued to support her, organizing demonstrations in support of the rental ban, where they have hoisted pictures of Waldron with captions declaring "We love you, Marie."

    Some opponents of the ban have characterized the Minutemen as extreme, even racist ---- something its leaders vehemently deny ---- and say Waldron's embrace of the group should be a cautionary signal for Latinos.

    Waldron called such statements ---- often bandied about at recent demonstrations ---- "hogwash."

    "I am proud to have the support of citizens who value the sovereignty of our nation," she said.

    Councilman Ed Gallo, who has shared the dais with Waldron for six years, has often sided with her on many of the more controversial issues she has championed, including the rental ban.

    The two don't always agree, he said. But Waldron has earned his respect, in part, because she never wavers from her stance.

    "She's not going to do things just because people want to hear it," Gallo said. "And in her mind, she's going to do what she thinks is right. And most of the time, she is right."
