Arizona Governor Doug Ducey Joins Georgia Governor in Supporting Importation of Afghan Refugees

Governor of Arizona Doug Ducey (R) has announced he will gladly welcome Afghan migrants into his state.

Per a Thursday news release, Gov. Ducey and state House Speaker Rusty Bowers released a joint statement criticizing President Joe Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal and declaring their intention to bring in an unspecified number of Afghan refugees.

The statement opens with an out-of-context Bible verse that, ostensibly, justifies the mass importation of refugees in principle.

Then Ducey and Bowers argue that the United States owes it to refugees fleeing Afghanistan because they were “instrumental in our nation’s operations and the safety of U.S. soldiers.”

“They helped our fight to defeat terrorist organizations and defend human rights, and now their lives are in danger,” they add. “We welcome them to our state full of opportunity and choice, and we’re working closely with federal and state officials to offer them safety in Arizona.”

The statement specifies what the state of Arizona will do to help the migrants, namely working with them “to secure housing and employment, enroll in English classes if needed, connect them with health care resources, and their children will be enrolled in school.” But as of now it is unclear how many they are looking to take.

This comes on the heels of another Republican governor, Brian Kemp of Georgia, calling for the sheltering of Afghan refugees:

“Joe Biden has broken his word to the nation, the Afghans and the world, but we as Americans cannot break our word to those who lent aid to us in our mission to defend freedom and bring justice to those who attacked our country on September 11,” he said in response to President-imposed Joe Biden’s disastrous pull-out.

He added that “it is vitally important to keep those who partnered with American armed forces over the last 20 years safe from harm.”

Many Republicans are increasingly nothing more than progressives going the speed limit.
