Lee County kicks Obama out of class

Lee County kicks Obama out of class

Collier also won't air his speech

    http://www.news-press.com/article/20090 ... 03077/1075

At noon Tuesday, President Barack Obama will broadcast a back-to-school address live to schools around the nation on C-SPAN and the Internet.

Students in Lee and Collier counties, however, will have to wait until they get home to learn what the president said. The local districts join many school systems nationwide that have made pledges to not air Obama’s speech, citing schedule conflicts or to appease parents threatening to keep their children home.

The U.S. Department of Education said Obama’s address “will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning.â€

I beleive I read somewhere that Broward County in SE Fla has stated there won't be the option to opt out. I know a lot of parents down there who will be keeping their kids home.

Unfortunately Broward County, FL isn't one of them. Not only are they going to air the speech in all public schools, they are not giving anyone the option to opt out. The only opt out option is to stay at home. And to add insult to injury, my kids go to a private Catholic school that will also be showing the speech with no opt-out. They haven't made a decision about the lesson plan.

If he is telling kids to do well and try their best, who cares? I would bet all the tea in China, he doesn't say "vote for Dems", "vote for illegal immigration," blah blah blah. Get over it people. Because you disagree with some of his or all of his agenda, he can't say anything positive to kids? Pick your battles people.

attorneyatlaw, maybe, or maybe not, he has an agenda in this, but it does matter to parents who see this as subversive and of NO educational value.

As well, having celebrities telling kids to pledge to not flush the toilet after they go pee? Seriously...what educational value is that?

Well, to some degree, does not matter to me, my kids have been homeschooled, out of the liberal institutions for some time now, no longer to be indoctrinated.

Finally a voice of reason! When I was a kid, I saw a Regan speech at school. Bush did it too, but you sure didn't see this kind of protest. It's only because Obama is a democrat that people have a problem all of a sudden.

Here's further proof of this getting out of hand. Here is a direct quote from Bush's speech to kids:

"Write me a letter -- and I'm serious about this one -- write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals. I think you know the address."

Nobody made a peep about this at the time. And yet when the lesson plan associated with Obama's speech (and not Obama himself!) asks students to "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president," right wingers claim it is political brainwashing.

Just another example of how the reaction to Obama's speech is not comparable to the reaction to Bush's. Hypocrisy at it's best!

There's a big difference between some political jawboning during an election year, and conservative activists using their kids as pawns to disrespect the president.

As a former educator (10 years), there were many parents who found no educational value in my lessons. If I were limited by parental objections, I would have never taught a lesson. So now parents should dictate what lessons and skills are valuable? What's the purpose of college degrees, state licensing, teacher credentials, and teacher development programs when the parents really know the value of each lesson and skills. On behalf of the many teachers who did not have to teach your children, THANK YOU. You children are the last people we want in class because of your lack of respect for our education, and skills. What are schools for then when we could just leave it up to parents?
