BOEHNER TO CONSERVATIVES: WE'RE 'WATCHING' YOUR VOTES
BOEHNER TO CONSERVATIVES: WE'RE 'WATCHING' YOUR VOTES
by TONY LEE 6 Dec 2012, 7:12 AM PDT
After purging four conservative House members from key Committees, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) threatened Republican members of Congress on Wednesday by telling them Republican leaders are “watching” their votes to determine future committee assignments.
Boehner's remarks are a sign that the moderate House Republican leadership will be less tolerant of conservative dissent.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), who was removed from the Budget Committee, said Boehner warned those in his conference that "there may be more folks that will be targeted" and the Republican leadership is "watching all of your votes."
“It was a message to the Republican Conference in general, especially the comment today that there may be more punishment coming if you don’t vote the right way,” Huelskamp told The Hill.
Breitbart News investigative reporter Matthew Boyle broke the story that House Republican leadership used a secret list of votes in a closed-door meeting to decide to remove Huelskamp and Reps. Justin Amash (R-MI), Walter Jones (R-NC), and David Schweikert (R-AZ) from their Committees.
According to The Hill, Boehner “addressed the firestorm over the removal of four lawmakers from plum committee assignments at the weekly GOP conference meeting.” His remarks may be a sign that Boehner is willing to adopt the tactics of former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), who was known as “the hammer” last decade for his ability to whip Republicans in line.
Some of DeLay's former aides now work for Boehner.
Conservative lawmakers wanted answers to the “crimes committed” by the four members dropped from their committees. Huelskamp was furious that the the purge happened behind closed doors.
“Where I come from in Kansas, if you want to stab a guy, you look him in the eye,” he said. “You don’t go behind a closed door.”
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said he wants the list of votes that was used to purge the members from the committees to be made public.
“I’m most troubled because independent voices will not be as vocal as they might as well have been … some of them are going to be intimidated,” King said.
Boehner's moves upset many prominent conservatives -- and some are calling for him to be removed as Speaker.
Ned Ryun, the president of American Majority Action, on Wednesday urged conservatives “fire” Boehner as House Speaker, noting that only 16 Republicans needed to abstain from voting for him for Speaker to get the process or removing him started.
“Speaker Boehner has been an abysmal failure as speaker, and his latest purge is the nail in the coffin for conservatives,” Ryun said. “Boehner has never won a negotiation battle with the White House or Senate—and he’s been nothing short of an embarrassing spokesman for the Conservative Movement. It’s time for him to go.”

Only 16 Members Can Unseat Boehner, Group Says
by Matthew Boyle
5 Dec 2012

The president and CEO of conservative group American Majority Action (AMA) is demanding Republicans band together to fire House Speaker John Boehner.
“Speaker Boehner has been an abysmal failure as speaker, and his latest purge is the nail in the coffin for conservatives,” AMA’s Ned Ryun said in a statement. “Boehner has never won a negation battle with the White House or Senate—and he’s been nothing short of an embarrassing spokesman for the Conservative Movement. It’s time for him to go.”
Ryun pointed out, too, that if conservatives want to unseat Boehner, they’d only need 16 members to abstain from supporting him in January. That’s because Boehner needs 218 votes to become Speaker again. Seeing as there are 233 House Republicans next Congress, and assuming no Democrats would vote for Boehner as Speaker, if 16 conservative Republicans abstain from voting, Boehner wouldn’t regain the Speakership.
“The Conservative Movement doesn’t realize we only need 16 House votes to block Boehner from becoming Speaker,” Ryun said. “House rules demand nominees for speaker to receive a majority—at least 218 votes—to win election. If 16 members abstain, Boehner only has 217 votes.”
The Republican caucus already locked the votes for leadership slots up in conference shortly after the election, but it has to be made official at the beginning of the next Congress in January. That means conservatives upset with Boehner’s leadership technically could band together to ouster him.
After this week’s Boehner purge of conservatives from influential committee roles, enough Republicans might be perturbed enough to do something about it – especially with Boehner threatening retaliation against more than just the four conservatives he’s already yanked from their committee spots if anyone else doesn’t toe the leadership line.

Club for Growth's Chocola Hits Boehner, Warns of Primary Challenges
Club for Growth President Chris Chocola tells Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview that Speaker Boehner's plan to raise taxes by closing loopholes and limiting deductions is nothing more than a tax increase and will further harm the U.S. economy as "anti-growth." And he warns that many people will be “very upset” if Republicans vote for tax increases — and those lawmakers could face a primary challenge with Club for Growth support.

Et tu, Boehner?
House Speaker John Boehner is working feverishly to find common ground with Obama to avert the coming fiscal cliff, but based on which four GOP lawmakers he chose to unceremoniously strip of their key committee positions, he's not as interested in working to find common ground with fiscal conservatives in his own party.

What's your opinion of House Speaker John Boehner?
- He's the best House speaker since 'Tip' O'Neill
- He recognizes that bipartisanship and compromise are necessary
- He's masterful at keeping his troops together despite ideological differences
- He's a pragmatic politician
- He's a typical right-wing hack paid off by moneyed interests
- He's decent but too weak and too desirous of being popular to be the warrior we need
- No Republican could serve Obama's interests better
- He wants to be popular with the press - the fatal flaw of most Republicans
- The guy has no fight in him. He's a RINO who has joined the opposite side
- Maybe he'll destroy the Republican brand before 2014 come around
- Other
