Just got this reply from Sam Yoon - Boston City Council and my response back to his office.
Dear,
Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I need your feedback in
order to do my job well.
I would first like to stress that we are only in the beginning phases
of
a lengthy process with this legislation, during which you will have
many
more opportunities to explain your views. I urge you to please come to
the public hearing to be held on this issue. I will let you know as
soon as a date is set.
This legislation is about giving legal residents of Boston a voice in
decisions that affect them. Legal immigrants in our city pay property
taxes as well as parking tickets; they send their children to Boston
public schools, serve in the military, and participate in our economy.
They take on all the responsibilities of living and contributing to
Boston's civic life, without any of the privileges.
Most legal immigrants are committed to obtaining full U.S. citizenship;
however, this is an extremely arduous and lengthy process. Those who
do
register to vote under this legislation would have to declare under
penalty of perjury that they are legal residents and are either in the
process of obtaining U.S. citizenship or have intentions to become a
U.S. citizen. Granting the right to vote in Boston elections is not
meant to provide immigrants with an alternative to becoming American
citizens.
Again, thank you for taking the time to write to me. If I can answer
any other questions for you please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Sam Yoon
My letter back to him:
Mr. Yoon:
I received your response to my letter regarding the above, however I do tend to disagree that noncitizens should be given the right to vote. Voting is a right that only american citizens are allowed. Having people that are not citizens of this country sway our politics would be suicide for the US.
You nor any of the Boston City Council has any idea on how many of these people will become citizens. Many may be deported for committing crimes prior to their applying for citizenship yet you want them to be allowed to vote in our elections. If you have no commitment to this country like citizenship you have no say in our government.
This will not pass as the majority of American citizens in the state of MA outweighs the number of resident aliens Mr. Yoon. And they do not have a vote on whether it passes either. You would do well to look into passing bills that benefit american citizens and not waste time on resident aliens and guest workers rights.
We have enough homeless and poor in the Commonwealth not to mention many other important issues that need to be addressed other than allowing people who are not citizens to vote.
You are sworn by oath of office to uphold the laws of this state and this country and you are now trying to change the laws to suit a bunch of people who are not even citizens to try and sway the vote. I will tell you now that you will not succeed as the citizens of MA will not stand for it.
It is liberals like you that make MA a state that many want to leave and are leaving as they are sick of the lack of public officials like yourself to do what is right for this state and its citizens.Freedom isn't free... Don't forget the men who died and gave that right to all of us....
