Census Bureau severs ties with ACORN in 2010 count

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Census Bureau on Friday severed its ties with ACORN, a community organization that has been hit with Republican accusations of voter-registration fraud.
"We do not come to this decision lightly," Census director Robert Groves wrote in a letter to ACORN, which was obtained by The Associated Press.
In splitting with ACORN, Groves sought to tamp down GOP concerns and negative publicity that the partnership will taint the 2010 head count.
"It is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 census efforts," Groves wrote.
Stephen Buckner, a census spokesman, confirmed the letter, but declined additional comment.
ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson did not immediately return a request for comment.
In recent months, Republicans have become increasingly critical of the census' ties with ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The group, which advocates for poor people, conducted a massive voter registration effort last year and became a target of conservatives when some employees were accused of submitting false registration forms with names such as "Mickey Mouse."
ACORN has said only a handful of employees submitted false registration forms and did so in a bid to boost their pay.
Partly citing ACORN's role, Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and David Vitter, R-La., earlier this year blocked a full confirmation vote of Groves for several weeks. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., also has been calling for a census boycott because of her concerns about whether the group would tamper with the high-stakes population count.
Up to now, the Census Bureau had defended ACORN's involvement, explaining it was one of 80,000 unpaid volunteer groups that the bureau hoped would be able to raise local awareness. But in his letter, Groves said it no longer had confidence that ACORN was effectively managing the partnership.
ACORN fired two employees who were seen on hidden-camera video giving tax advice to a man posing as a pimp and a woman who pretended to be a prostitute. Fox News Channel broadcast excerpts from the video on Thursday. On the video, a man and woman visiting ACORN's Baltimore office asked about buying a house and how to account on tax forms for the woman's income. An ACORN employee advised the woman to list her occupation as "performance artist."
In a statement, ACORN Maryland board member Margaret Williams said the video was an attempt to smear ACORN, and that undercover teams attempted similar setups in at least three other ACORN offices. Williams said no tax returns were filed and no assistance was provided.

ACORN Investigation: New Video Shows Corruption in Washington, DC Office
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:59 AM
Just one day after explosive video out of a Baltimore ACORN office showed workers advising a young couple on tax evasion, prostitution cover-up and the illegal trafficking of minors for sex, Fox News has uncovered a second hidden-camera conversation with ACORN workers--this time in the nation's capital.
This new video, shot on July 25, shows more ACORN workers discussing how the pair can keep the girls' profession under wraps. On the videotape, filmmaker James and his "girlfriend" Hannah receive guidance to establish Hannah--posing as a prostitute--as the sole proprietor of a bogus company to purposefully mask the nature of her illegal business.
The ACORN staffer is heard suggesting that O'Keefe can purchase a house, and as the landlord, if he is ever questioned by authorities, he can say he was unaware of the illegal business going on inside.
"[W]hen the police ask you, (tell them) you don't know where (the money is) coming from," the staffer said. "We are looking out for you."
The ACORN employee later suggests that O'Keefe, who said he had a budding political career, not linger at the house in case people "put the dots together" and leave him "smeared and tarnished" by his association with his prostitute girlfriend. She should keep her business "low key," the employee said.
ACORN calls itself a network of families "working together for social justice and stronger communities." Instead, this raw footage proves that this group is nothing more than a corrupt criminal enterprise.
Also, the fact that none of the workers in these videos have flinched at the idea of advising prostitutes and pimps on how to evade the IRS and the police sure tells us a lot: either they have no moral standards whatsoever, or they deal with this kind of situation a lot more frequently than they'd care to admit. Either way, this is criminal and my tax dollars should be no where near a place like this.

Here is a press release from ACORN's Baltimore office concerning the illegal activity they have been involved in. Shouldn't they be charged with RICO violations?

And if you wonder how ACORN stands on the issue of illegal alien invasion check this out:

Prosecute the ACORN video makers?
Rick Moran
You may have heard that Johnny Depp will be starring in a new version of Alice in Wonderland
Instead, he should have seen if Maryland State's Attorney Patricia Coats Jessamy was available considering that her office is looking into going after the two intrepid reporters who videotaped ACORN in the act of breaking several laws.
Talk about falling down a rabbit hole...
WBAL has a copy of a statement released by the Baltimore City State's Attorney:
coming out next year. He has been cast as the Mad Hatter but methinks director Tim Burton missed the boat in hiring Depp for that part.
Baltimore, MD - September 11, 2009 - We have received inquiries from citizens and the media asking whether the Baltimore City State's Attorneys Office would initiate a criminal investigation for acts allegedly committed at ACORN offices located in Baltimore. The only information received in reference to this alleged criminal behavior was a YouTube video. Upon review by this office, the video appears to be incomplete. In addition, the audio portion could possibly have been obtained in violation of Maryland Law, Annotated Code of Maryland Courts and Judicial Proceedings Article ยง10-402, which requires two party consent.
If it is determined that the audio portion now being heard on YouTube was illegally obtained, it is also illegal under Maryland Law to willfully use or willfully disclose the content of said audio. The penalty for the unlawful interception, disclosure or use of it is a felony punishable up to 5 years.
Incredible.
Meanwhile, no word on what, if any, charges are being brought against the ACORN employees who were advising Mr. O'Keefe and his friend to defraud the IRS, among other illegal advice.
This is so outrageous that Michelle Malkin is giving Jessamy "The Malkin Treatment." When violations of common sense and the public sensibility is this bad, Michelle will publicize the offending official's email address and phone number, inviting her hundreds of thousands of readers to get in touch with the official in an attempt to change their mind.
I would not want to be in Patricia Jessamy's shoes today. The difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien is the equivalent of the difference between a burglar and a houseguest.
