Commentary: Issue of Illegal Immigration Isn't Simple

This commentary was written by S. Renee Mitchell in The Oregonian of Portland, Oregon on Wednesday, February 8th.

"You know why it's so hard to have an honest dialogue about illegal immigration?
It crosses people's borders. You know that thin line between common sense and lunacy.
Every time I read about this topic, it's like having a conversation where you feel the issue is never fully vetted without folks getting emotional and, at times, illogical.
Now the Republican candidates for Oregon governor, who didn't care a whit about this a few months ago, are body-slamming the issue on the table with promises to take away access to drivers licenses, voter registration cards and tax-paid benefits.
It's all part of a national crusade to rally conservative voters. But politicizing a very complicated debate does little more than fan the sentiments of right-wing talk show hosts and stir the ire of pro-immigration advocates.
The reallity is, most of us are ambivelent. According to a December poll by the Washington Post and ABC News, four in five Americans think the federal government is not doing enough to police our borders.
Fifty-six percent say illegal immigrants do the United States more harm than good. But three in five say undocumented workers should be allowed to stay legally if they're working.
Whiel we wait for the federal government to sort through our conflicting ideology, residents must manage whatever burdens or benefits these individuals bring to our doorstep.
And those realities can be costly. Our public schools are affected. so are our hospital emergency rooms. Our police and jails. Our mental-health services. Our roads and our housing stock, too.
the latest estimate is that many as 150,000 illegal immigrants live in Oregon, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Most are young Mexican couples or single men who work but are less educated.
One of them is a 38 year-old gardener from Ecuador I met. I never asked his immigration status when I hired him last year. I gave him the job because he is friendly and reliable.
When I called him again this week, he didn't want me to use his name because his five-year visa just expired. his friends warned him to stay low unitl his legal residency comes through.
"People get really nervous about that", he says,"because we don't know what's going to happen."
In Ecuador, he says, he made $70 a month working as a medical assistant. But, he says, you need about $200 a month to live there "just to live a decent life." So he moved here and took English lessons before he dared to speak out loud.
To save on expenses, he lives with two friends he met here. Two months ago, he bought a 1997 pickup for his gardening business. And he sends money every month to his wife and two children, ages 11 and 6.
"I know it sounds silly or stupid not being able to see my family," he says. But it costs a lot of sacrifice if you want to better yourself. Sometimes, it costs the marriage of your family."
He acknowledges he has met some Latino men who aren't interested in working or learning English. Some mothers use their children to get access to government benefits.
"It's not where you are from; it;s who you are," he says,"I'm not saying all the people is good or all the people is bad, but talk to them, and you will have an idea who they are."
He says he has heard ignorant comments and insults that make him think some anti-immigration concerns are just a ruse for racial profiling.
"It's not Hispanic or Latino; it;s Mexican," he says. "You have to sometimes pretend that is is not with you what they are saying."
Hearing this story, I can better appreciate the nuance between being in this country illegally and having a criminal mind-set. But I'm still torn.
Illegal immigration creates real challenges and financial consequences. It merits an honest dialogue, not a politically expedient sound bite."

AMAZING AND INSIGHTFUL, ANOTHER LEFTIST ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT APOLOGIST, WANTING TO USE THE BOO-HOO FACTOR TO NOT ONLY SALVE HER CONCIENSE FOR HIRING AN ILLEGAL ALIEN, BUT TO TRY TO KNOCK DOWN ANY POTENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO IS REPUBLICAN (THE CURRENT GOVERNOR IS DEMOCRAT AND UNTIL NOW HE HAS NEVER DONE WHIT ABOUT THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTION PROBLEM IN THIS STATE, AND THATS HIS JOB, AND NOW HE IS SUDDENLY MAKING IT AN ISSUE TO, THATS ONLY BECAUSE HE WANTS TO KEEP HIS CUSHY JOB!)

SHE MAY HAVE A FEW GOOD POINTS THAT IS SAID BY THIS MAN WHO WORKS FOR HER, ABOUT HOW HE ADMITS MANY COME HERE TO LIVE OFF THE TAX-PAYERS AND HOW SOME (MANY) REFUSE TO LEARN ENGLISH. HOWEVER, SHE IS STILL MISSING THE POINT, ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL AND NO MATTER WHAT COLOR OF ROSY PINK YOU PAINT IT, IT STILL SHOWS THROUGH.

I ALSO NOTICED HER SURVEY NUMBERS AND INFORMATION SEEMED OFF TO ME, SO THE READER POSSIBLY WOULD LEAN TO THE ILLEGALS SIDE?
YES, THEY BRING HEAVY BURDENS TO THE TAXPAYING CITIZENS, SHE GOT THAT PART RIGHT, THANK GOODNESS SHE DID NOT TRY TO DOWNPLAY THAT ISSUE.

This is not what three in five said. They said illegal aliens can become legal if they have a job, are paying taxes, and learn English. Except this is a loaded question, it makes people think these illegals will be paying their way, when in reality most of them won't. The "English" test is only about 100 words long. Which means they will still want ballots and everything else in Spanish. And guess who gets to pay them to learn even this limited amount of English?

As for taxes, if you only make from $10,000 to $15,000 a year, and have two US born children, the IRS PAYS YOU $4400!! You can earn as much as $30,000 and the IRS still gives you some amount of money!! It is called the earned income tax credit!! They pay you even if you have not paid any tax!! I bet 90% of illegal aliens instead of paying income taxes, would get a payment from the IRS!! This is what Ted Kennedy and McCain mean when they say "pay taxes". It will be Americans paying more taxes so the IRS can give amnestied illegal aliens money!

You're right Tim they would most likely get EIC and really never pay into taxes. She seems to have missed that. Though to me the issue is right now, these people are ILLEGAL and not doing anything to help with the financial burden they place on the taxpayers of this state alone, notwithstanding the 49 others they are a burden to.
Our schools here in Oregon are going bankrupt becasue of the burden the illegals heavy birthrate. One apartment here in our complex, the couple have at least five kids in, they are two bedroom places. Now my opinion of any family is that you and your kids can squish into a small place temporarily, and as long as you are attempting to maintain a controlled household and decently clean, its your business, but when your popping the little rugrats out one after another, with no intentions of changing your address to accomodate your growing brood, you are becoming a burden to the neighborhood and school district your in.
When a city uses property information, they attempt to determine how many people would realistically live, say in a three bed two bath home, most people would have 3 kids with two adults in the house. This kind of logic within a school district is what the state budgets for, an average of children per home in the area, according to living standards and accomodations. So when you have a couple who live in a two bedroom apartment with five kids, and thats just one place, its happening all over our school district, then it overwhelms what they budgeted for, irregardless of what the numbers actually are at the local school level.
This is the kind of stuff that people are not wanting to say when they try to water down the subject of illegal immigration.
Thelma, she's just a dang Portland liberal, I've read a lot of her columns and like many of the libs here in Portland, they like to play up on the so sad stories. Thats why I always liked Phil Stanford (who's now with the Tribune), he says it like it is. But tops on that list LARS LARSON!!!!!Three cheers for Lars . TIM, OR ANYONE, GO TO HIS SITE, JUST GOOGLE HIS NAME AND LINK TO HIS SITE, HE'S GREAT.

We make this whole issue a lot harder than it has to be. The bottom line is, illegal aliens are here illegally. Employers who hire illegals are breaking the law. Anyone who supports illegal aliens or their employers are enabling crime. When our government doesn't enforce the law, it sends a signal to all of society, that it's OK to break some laws, if enough people are making money off of it. We have the LAW on our side and no arguement from the President, Conressmen, pro-immigration groups, LULAC, MALDEF or the ACLU, trumps the LAW. We have to beat them over the head with the LAW everytime they make their arguements. We cannot loose with the LAW as our basis.

Tim, I never even thought about that! You are right! And when they so-called "pay" their taxes, they are going to feel like they own part of the country. With under the table incomes, they can make their income 15,000 to 30,000 even if they did make more. So they have another way to rob us and our children.
