I had a great dislike of socialist France. Jacques Chirac was a terrible villain. François Mitterand was responsible for the decline of relations between France and the US. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing might as well have been Lenin. Georges Pompidou was generally responsible for terrible economic times and bad trade acts. Charles de Gaulle was a joke! The period between 1959 until Sarkozy has given us a great deal to dislike about the French. They have had some very terrible and very vocal anti-Western rhetoric that has made its way into foreign policy. As a country, some French socialist and communist ideas have kept the silly and archaic idea of collectivism alive for some time. They would riot in the street for welfare and silly entitlement packages. They haven't really flourished as a country.

But, under the surface the French are great lovers of Liberty. If you travel to the smaller cities and villages in France (especially Normandy) you will find people with the same ideas about expression and personal liberty that we have in the US. Afterall, our fledgling country and new ideas sparked their revolution.

After over 60 years of collectivism, I see the French as finally coming to the realization that their socialist system is unproductive, destructive and simply unmanageable. They have watched as other countries, some with democratically established social welfare benefits systems surged, ahead of them. With Sarkozy I think we will see the French stop slamming their heads on the Imaginot Line over and over and expecting different results everytime. Their marked change in immigration policy seems to signify that. I do however follow their progress with suspect...

As for their immigration policies, I have to say I am impressed. We should attempt to outdo them, but hopefully they will set a standard.

Well, maybe not. He wasn't exceptionally bright, though.
