he Hazleton City Council race is between two teams.

It pits Democratic challengers Dickie Cusatis and Maureen Pozzessere, who have positioned themselves as a team, against incumbent Republicans Evelyn Graham and Joe Yannuzzi, who are running as part of a team with Mayor Lou Barletta.

Barletta, should he win a third term, has much riding on the race. Who wins the council seats may well determine whether he accomplishes his initiatives or not.

If either Graham or Yannuzzi loses, the majority on council would change. Right now, Barletta has it, with Graham, Yannuzzi and Jack Mundie, who has solidly supported his initiatives.

Well, they are definitely going to have a rough time.

Not only did Lou Barletta win the Republican nomination, he won the Democratic nomination as well through a write in campaign.

Barletta DOES have an opponent, although the Standard-Speaker likes to ignore that fact. And Louie Tarone wrote that article, and he is friends with Barletta's opponent John Medashefski.

John was (legally) born in Hazleton and lived there all his life. He recently donated some 12 inches or so of hair to locks of love, touting his new "Lou-Do." LOL He apparently has a sense of humor as well.

Unfortunately, his thinks it would be best to ix-nay the IIRA lawsuit. This is the only place where I completely disagree with him.

He does have some awesome ideas for helping the city, such as skate parks and a recreation board. He is a well-known artist and owns a business on Alter St.

I doubt he will win. Nobody knows he's even running. However, what's going to happen when Barletta wins mayor again, and then resigns a few months later to run for Senate or Governor? (Not a ridiculous thought, it's been in the news that he's considering it.)
