Donald Trump Fires His Campaign Manager

Donald Trump Fires Corey Lewandowski, His Campaign Manager

Donald J. Trump has fired his contentious campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, a move that comes as the presumptive Republican nominee faces challenges as he heads into the general election.

Mr. Lewandowski could not immediately be reached for comment about his departure, which was announced by the campaign.

“The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”

With the Republican National Convention looming next month, Mr. Trump is facing the task of broadening his team to include people with previous presidential campaign experience.

Mr. Trump also has been turning his attention to fund-raising for the first time, a task that Mr. Lewandowski had assumed oversight of and one that has gone slowly for the campaign. The campaign has aired no ads in the general election and there has been no “super PAC” that received a clear public blessing from Mr. Trump and his top advisers.

The loss of Mr. Lewandowski was intended as part of a larger shift toward the final sprint of the race, according to those briefed on the matter.

Mr. Trump had faced increasing concerns from allies and donors, as well as his children, about the next phase of the campaign. It is a move that could reassure donors and Republicans more broadly that he can adjust toward a November election strategy.

Two people briefed on the move, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Mr. Lewandowski was fired.

The campaign manager was seen as having a hostile relationship with many members of the national press corps who cover Mr. Trump, and many officials at the Republican National Committee had strained relationships with him.

And Mr. Lewandowski was often at odds with Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, Paul Manafort, who was brought on in March when the candidate seemed poised for a lengthy fight over delegates.

Mr. Lewandowski was said to have resisted certain moves that would have increased the number of staff members, at times blocking Mr. Manafort from making hires or later undoing them.

But the people briefed on Mr. Lewandowski’s departure said that the circumstances went well beyond any particular episode or any particular relationship. Mr. Lewandowski had a penchant for making headlines about himself that overshadowed his boss, including being charged with misdemeanor battery, a charge later dropped, after he was accused of grabbing a reporter as she approached Mr. Trump with a question in Jupiter, Fla., on March 8, a night when the candidate won three of four Republican state primary votes.

One person stressed that the move had been in the works for many weeks, particularly since it became clear that Mr. Trump would be the nominee. The person added said that the campaign is now focusing on bringing the party together, including hiring new staff members and adjusting to the race against Hillary Clinton. And there had been a desire for many weeks to make changes ahead of the Republican National Convention, July 18-21 in Cleveland.

Mr. Lewandowski, 42, a New Hampshire resident with deep ties to the state, had made himself a delegate to the convention months ago. He is still the chairman of the state’s delegation to the convention.

121COMMENTSNo one inside the campaign was given any advance warning about the dismissal of Mr. Lewandowski, who was on the campaign’s daily 8:30 a.m. conference call on Monday, according to a person briefed on the developments.

On Twitter, some campaign staff members rejoiced at the news of Mr. Lewandowski’s departure.

“Ding dong the witch is dead!” wrote Michael Caputo, a Trump communications aide who was said to have been antagonized by Mr. Lewandowski.

I was really sorry to see it come to this, because I think Corey did a great job for Trump, helped to do what many thought was impossible, but we're in a different phase and I guess a different type of manager is needed. I'm sure it was a hard decision for Trump. So much invested, and he wants to win. So, lets hope it makes a difference and Paul Manafort can catapult it forward.

Thanks for all the hard work, but we need to get to the White House. The campaign is needlessly behind in many aspects organizationally and Trump needs a little wind at his back now. Hopefully this will help.

Corey Lewandowski Escorted Out of Trump Tower, Out of Trump Campaign

Donald J. Trump fired his wunderkind campaign manager Corey Lewandowski Monday at the campaign’s regular Trump Tower meeting.

“Corey was escorted out of the building,” a source close to the campaign told Breitbart News.

Lewandowski came to the meeting unaware that he had lost the support of the GOP presumptive nominee, the source said. At the meeting, attended by both senior campaign staff and members of the family, Trump reviewed different campaign metrics that were all faltering: cooperation with party leaders, fundraising, surrogate operations and most importantly the polls.

The campaign manager seemed to have run out of ideas. When the New York City developer asked Lewandowski what he would do to turn things around, the only thing he could come up with was for Trump to announce his pick for vice-president.

Pitching that as the solution sealed his fate, the source said. “The VP pick was the one piece of suspense that would make people tune into the convention—Corey wanted to give that away now? There was no way.”

When the time came for Trump to lower the axe, no one spoke up to defend Lewandowski.

One month ago, Lewandowski was reported in the New York Post to have had a screaming match with the campaign’s press secretary about the running of the campaign on an uptown Manhattan street four blocks up from Trump Tower.

Afterwards, there was speculation that Lewandowski was in trouble.

I think there is false reporting by a biased dishonest media. I'm listening now to an interview with Corey and Dana Bash, and her "sources" about all these wild stories are false according to Corey.

A conversation between dad and daughter:

It was ultimately Ivanka Trump who sat down with her father on Sunday and convinced him to let Lewandowski go -- even offering an ultimatum of sorts about her own continued involvement with the campaign, according to sources with knowledge of this conversation.
Some advisers hope the latest move will allow the campaign to ramp up more quickly by building out a communications team, a rapid response effort and by ramping up their political machine in battleground states, an adviser said.
"This has not been a campaign, it's been a concert tour," the adviser said, adding this could be the turning point for the campaign to get more serious.
A second adviser added a note of caution though, saying if Trump isn't willing to behave in a more disciplined fashion, then Lewandowski's departure may do little good.
"I don't know if it helps Trump personally unless he is willing to completely change through the Manafort model," the adviser added.

This should pave the way for Trump to move his struggling campaign forward. I am happy for the campaign, but will take a wait and see approach. A disciplined approach from here on in will make the path to the White House much straighter.

Any Trump advisor speaking to CNN about family and campaign business anonymously is not someone the Trump's can trust, so neither should we. Neither should CNN, but obviously truth isn't what they seek.

Second top staffer exits Trump campaign amid shakeup

The shakeup in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign claimed a second victim on Monday.

The presumptive GOP nominee’s team started the day with the announcement that campaign manager Corey Lewandowski had been pushed aside. By Monday afternoon, a second aide, adviser Michael Caputo, was no longer with the campaign.

Caputo’s departure, which was first reported by CNN, came after he sent a tweet in which he declared, “Ding dong the witch is dead!” shortly after news of Lewandowski’s departure broke. Caputo told Yahoo News that he sent a resignation letter to the campaign, saying he wanted to step down because he recognized his tweet was a distraction.

“I regret sending out a tweet today alluding to the firing of Corey Lewandowski. In hindsight, that was too exuberant a reaction to this personnel move. I know this is a distraction from the kind of campaign you want to run, so I’m resigning my position as director of communications for caucus operations at the 2016 Republican Convention. Let’s make this immediate,” Caputo wrote in the letter, which was addressed to campaign chairman Paul Manafort and another aide.

A Trump campaign source told Yahoo News that Caputo did not resign willingly and was “fired” for his tweet about Lewandowski.

“Michael Caputo was fired this morning because he tweeted on Corey, which was not something that good people do,” the source said. “You know, good people do not go and step on a guy after he’s been knocked out and that was apparently what he was doing so he was discharged this morning.”

Caputo told Yahoo that he “said everything I wanted to say in that letter” and had no further comment on the matter. However, he specifically denied the claim that he was fired.

“I’m not going to give into all that. I resigned,” Caputo said, adding, “Unforced errors have no place in this campaign.”

Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Yahoo News about Caputo’s departure.

Lewandowski was often a distraction for the campaign and reports repeatedly suggested an ongoing feud between him and Manafort. Earlier in the year, he was charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly grabbing a reporter, but the charge was dropped. Lewandowski did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Yahoo News on Monday about his exit from the campaign, but in a pair of television interviews, he suggested that it was amicable.

I am not sure you are in a position to advise Trump nor his family about who to trust or perhaps you have a relationship with them that I am unaware of. These events are clearly a positive pivot for his campaign. It is also refreshing for his children (who are so smart and in touch with reality) and family because they have endured the most difficult three weeks of the campaign this month including Trump himself. Trump sounds like he is on board with the necessary changes and ready to move the campaign forward. I think if you look deep enough you will find this was on the level and fairly accurate.
