The former speaker of the House made those dramatic, incongruous statements on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” which aired live from Washington, D.C. Friday.
Maher asked Pelosi about recent polling which shows that the GOP is likely to take over the upper chamber and asked, given gridlock in Washingon, why it matters that Democrats keep control.
“It would be very important for the Democrats to retain control of the Senate,” Pelosi told Maher. “Civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if the Republicans win the Senate.”
Democrats currently hold 53 seats in the Senate. Republicans have 45. Two independents caucus with Democrats.
Maher asked about voter turnout for Democrats, which he asserted was too low to carry the party in the mid-term.
“Nobody comes about to vote to say ‘thank you,’” Maher said. “The people who get health care now — they’re the people least likely to vote. The people who come out to vote are the angry people.”
“That’s true,” said Pelosi. “Fear is a motivator, and we are not fear-mongers. The Democrats are messengers of hope, and that’s what we will continue to be.”
Nevertheless, Pelosi said she thinks election models are flawed.
“All of the prognostications are predicated on false, ancient, old, stale assumptions,” she claimed. “We’re in a whole new world of communications now.”
Pelosi pointed out that “prognosticators” initially predicted that former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor would win his GOP primary by 35 points. Instead, he lost by 10, she said.
“They were 45 points long, 90 miles off shore of Washington, D.C.,” Pelosi said of the pollsters.
“So how do they know what’s going on in the heartland of America?” the San Francisco liberal asked.

Does MSNBC Host Rev. Al Sharpton Know More Than 37% of Americans: What Party Controls the Senate?

Meet MSNBC political pundit the Reverend Al Sharpton. Sharpton recently stepped into a political cow paddy by averring the Senate was run by Republican Mitch McConnell.
Newsbusters caught the blunder in an MSNBC panel discussing President Obama seeking Congressional approval for his new foray into Syria and Iraq to fight the Islamic group ISIS. Newsbusters helpfully offered a transcript:SHARPTON: If in fact those that are opposed to the president feel they have the votes, they should then convene and vote and tell the American people, we’ve said something needs to be done, we don’t care what the polls say, we’re voting against this president. It’s for them to convene and to say Mitch Mcconnell and John Boehner can call the vote. We should be asking why won’t they call the vote if they think the president is out of bounds.Republican Senator Mitch McConnell can perhaps go on C-SPAN, fulminate, and call for a vote. But, oblivious Sharpton doesn’t seem to understand McConnell, the Minority Leader, is not in charge of the United States Senate.
Only Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can effect a vote. Later, Sharpton appears to have caught his mistake and then blunders on in an attempt patch it up:SHARPTON: I think that if Mr. Boehner is serious, then he’s the Speaker of the House, call a vote. I think John McCain should go to the floor of the Senate tomorrow, call a vote. It’s very interesting how McCain even said, “Yes, I think it should be a vote, I don’t know why the president doesn’t call it.”He’s in the Senate. They’re the heads of the committees. They have the numbers to call votes. I mean, what are we talking about here? It’s like everyone is dancing around what they should do. The president laid out his four-point strategy tonight, whether one agrees or not. They’re talking about a vote they can call. Here again, after inexplicably invoking the name of John McCain and after calling on McConnell to call a vote, Sharpton claims, “[T]hey’re the heads of the committees. They have the numbers to call votes.”
Uh, Al, no they don’t. Only the majority party is allowed to lead committees. Republicans have only 45 seats in the Senate. To repeat, the Democrats are in charge and have been since 2007.
Even though he’s a leading pundit for MSNBC and should know better, Sharpton certainly has a lot of company, according to a new Rasmussen poll.
Rasmussen Reports reveals that just 63% of voters know who’s running the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, but 37% either don’t know or seem to care. And this latest poll actually shows things are getting worse.
Respondents had a 50-50 chance of getting it right and 37% still biffed the answer. Apparently, including MSNBC host Al Sharpton.

If the Democrats lose control, all of the lies, financial abuse and payoffs will come tumbling out. The Corruption Chronicles, by tom Fitton, gives a lot of insight to Nancy Pelosi and her husband and many ways that they have profited from her position.
Maybe she can be made to repay the tax payers for the free airline that she ran as Speaker and the top shelf liquor bills.Last edited by Newmexican; 09-14-2014 at 08:15 AM.

Nancy Pelosi is, without a doubt, the biggest 'drama queen' to ever sit in the U.S. Congress.

Glenn Beck
Possibly the craziest thing she's said yet...
Nancy Pelosi fear-mongers: Civilization would be in ‘jeopardy’ if GOP wins Senate
Monday, Sep 15, 2014 at 11:43 AM -0400
During an appearance on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told Bill Maher civilization as we know would be in real trouble if the Republican Party took control of the Senate in November. On radio this morning, Glenn wondered how Democrats constantly get away with this sort of hyperbolic rhetoric.
Video at the page link:
Maher asked Pelosi why the American people should care about the midterm elections. Poll after poll shows dissatisfaction with Congress is at an all time high as partisan politics and gridlock continuously get in the way of governance.
“What do I care if [Democrats] lose the Senate,” Maher asked.
“It would be very important for the Democrats to retain control of the Senate,” Pelosi said. “Civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if Republicans win the Senate.”
Glenn was disgusted by the comment, which he ranked as one of the “craziest” things he has heard from Pelosi, but Pat and Stu were not convinced.
“Was this the craziest thing you’ve ever heard,” Glenn asked.
“From her specifically,” Stu asked. “I don’t know… She said there is nothing, ‘the cupboard was bare.’ There was nothing to cut in the entire government.”
“She also said her favorite word is ‘the word,’” Pat added.
While Pelosi’s assessment may come across as a fear-mongering tactic, she reiterated Democrats are the party of hope not fear.
“Nobody comes about to vote to say ‘thank you,’” Maher said. “The people who get health care now — they’re the people least likely to vote. The people who come out to vote are the angry people.”
“That’s true,” Pelosi responded. “Fear is a motivator, and we are not fear-mongers. The Democrats are messengers of hope, and that’s what we will continue to be.”
“We’re fear-mongers,” Glenn said Republicans. “But civilization as we know it [is over], if the other party – who’s going to do exactly the same thing that we’re doing – wins.”

Election 2014: Beware of False Tears in the Democratic Crying Towel
By Doris O'Brien
I like to think Nancy Pelosi was just joking when she said on Jon Stewart's Daily Show that if Republicans won control of the Senate, it would be “the end of civilization as we know it.“ But the power-grabbing progressive from San Francisco is hardly imbued with a subtle, sarcastic wit. So no doubt she meant every word she crooned to the partisan Stewart audience, as she had a few years earlier when urging her charges in the House to pass the Affordable Health Care bill in order to know what was in it. Nancy Pelosi’s clueless bravado is, at least in part, the result of her perennial sense of security. She was born into wealth and married into more. She is the scion of a political family and represents a district whose constituents overwhelmingly support her political views, to the extent that she barely has to campaign for re-election every two years. This enables her to transfer amassed wealth from her own political coffers to the campaigns of Democrat candidates running in more competitive districts. Pelosi’s ability to raise and distribute funds among partisans is the key to her irrational power within her own party.
But while the former speaker of the House may not always see the big picture, she totally gets the idea of sweating the small stuff. At a recent press conference, when asked about “illegal immigrants,” Pelosi was quick to correct that term to “undocumented workers.” Her noble sense of political correctness extends to all those whose votes her party’s ambitions require. Obviously, this does not include Republicans, whom she treats with the utmost disdain. The chances of Ms. Pelosi regaining her leadership in the House after the 2014 elections is almost nonexistent. And like many Democrats this year, she is doing a lot of handwringing at the prospect of a Republican Senate takeover. Ordinarily, the bigwigs in both political parties try their best to sound optimistic about their prospects, regardless of the facts. Even when poll numbers are bleak, the tendency has always been to play them down and anticipate a big turnaround on election day.
But this year, a general sense of optimism among Democrats seems to be off the table. For example, I attended a recent lecture given by a college professor and die-hard Obama supporter, who began his talk by emphatically – if glumly – stating that Republicans will gain control of the Senate in the mid-term elections. He further predicted that voter turnout would be at an all-time low, because the constant savaging of President Obama by Republicans has diminished Americans’ appetite for the political process! He sadly pointed out how old and tired his hero in the White House has become. (So now it seems Republicans are also to blame for the president’s hair turning gray!) No mention was made, however, of the fact that many Democrats running in the midterm elections are distancing themselves from President Obama.
There is the same underlying sense of discouragement – almost desperation – in the pleas for money and votes churned out constantly by the DNC. If Democrats don’t give and/or don’t vote, they warn, it’s Armageddon for America, another riff on “the end of civilization as we know it.” Such scare tactics have been employed very effectively by Democrats in the last couple of elections. For a party that only six years ago campaigned on a platform of “hope” and “change, ” this is an about-face. But “hope,” it seems, has left the building. And “change” has been lost in the fog of indecision and ineptitude that has clouded this administration.
The hollow promises traditionally trumpeted by Democrats – more jobs, better education, cleaner environment, rights for women and minorities, etc. – are still a prominent part of the playbook. But there has been a renewed impetus on threats of what will happen if Republicans take control. So the overarching campaign argument for Democrats boils down to what they will do for the voters versus what Republicans will do to them. Regrettably, the spirit of hope and change has morphed into fear and loathing.
But don’t be fooled by the seeming dispiritedness of Democrats in this election cycle. It would be folly to suppose that they are throwing in the crying towel, even in the contested congressional races in which Republicans now enjoy a lead. In fact, they are pouring unprecedented amounts of money into these contests. The neck-and-neck Senate race in North Carolina may end up being the most expensive of its kind in campaign history. All the Democrat “defeatist” rhetoric is nothing more than a ploy to propel the party’s reticent followers to the polls, even while giving Republicans an undue sense of optimism.
Look at this tactic as a modern “spin” on the popular Aesop’s fable, as Democrats portray themselves as the put-upon tortoise in a race against the Republican hare. Fortunately, our highly developed political sense of smell can detect another animal in the mix. And every twitch of the rat’s black whiskers should remind Republicans that temptations during the last weeks of the campaign to relax efforts or to rest on the laurels of prediction could lead to a disappointingly different outcome in the race to the finish.
