I had heard about this a few weeks ago - maybe a month.

We were in our local chain grocery just days after hearing aobut it, and they had these packaged salads on sale - people were buying them a half dozen at a time. Maybe it was not the ones that was supposed to be targeted by the recall - but I did notice it.

    They
    > don't know yet how the Ecoli got in,

I haven't been to a lettuce plant......but I did work at a sprout farm. Alfalfa sprouts, mung beans, onion, radish etc. sprouts. Ours was listed as washed and ready to eat. It was washed. We had a pretty cool system. But washing alone won't get rid of ecoli. We had one test come back positive for ecoli. We didn't know how that could be either. But it's fairly easy. Insect droppins, rodents, etc. I can't attest to every process but the packaging of alot of our foods isn't as sterile as you would expect. My ex's aunt worked at a Heinz factory in the Pittsburgh area and she won't eat anything from Heinz. Might be Hunts.....I don't remember for positive. But in ALOT of things there is an acceptable quota of insect parts, etc. Where there's food.....there's bugs and rodents and it doesn't take a big problem to cause a big problem. Not to mention employee cleanliness.

Oh, gosh. The more I hear, the less I want to go to the grocery store - and I am really hesitant about restaurants these days.

I am really feeling good about the canning and freezing we did this year.

Just a point of grammar. Taxonomic names should be italicized when presented in text publications, with the first letter of the genus capitalized.

    Escherichia coli or E. coli

Maybe its nit-picky, but recall how worked up we get when an illegal alien is called an "undocumented worker".

This is why I wash fresh foodstuffs I eat, even that listed as "ready to eat". Bacteria are EVERYWHERE, and you have no idea where the hands the previously handled your food has been.
