Ed Meese Puts the High Beams On President Bush’s “It’s Not Amnesty” Lie
Ed Meese exposes the lie of Bush’s claim that he’s not proposing amnesty for illegal aliens. Quotable:

this path to citizenship [the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act] was not automatic. Indeed, the legislation stipulated several conditions: immigrants had to pay application fees, learn to speak English, understand American civics, pass a medical exam and register for military selective service. Those with convictions for a felony or three misdemeanors were ineligible. Sound familiar? These are pretty much the same provisions included in the new Senate proposal and cited by its supporters as proof that they have eschewed amnesty in favor of earned citizenship.

The difference is that President Reagan called this what it was: amnesty ..

For all of the differences between Reagan and Bush this is the one that rankles most — for all of his self delusions, Reagan was a fundamentally honest person who dealt honestly with the American people. President Bush is often fundamentally dishonest in his dealings with the American people when pitching things like his Medicare Drug program, or his amnesty program for illegal aliens, or his “temporary” worker program for corporate America, etc. Once again — as he is on spending and the growth of government — when it comes to honest debate Bush is much more a new Nixon or a new LBJ than he is a new Reagan. And this more than anything explains the President’s Nixon level poll numbers.
