In response to Raymond F. Peck Jr.'s comment (Letters, Sept. 15) about requiring the passing of a written test in English by illegal immigrants: It certainly is to our benefit if all illegal immigrants would seek to become legal. In 1906, Congress, with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, passed legislation to require people seeking to become naturalized citizens to demonstrate oral English literacy. In 1950, the requirement was strengthened to require people to demonstrate an understanding of written English.

The common language was established long ago, and that language is English. It's time to enforce our established immigration laws. They are there and have been there; they just need to be enforced.
