Sanctuary covers everything
Lately we have wanted God to stay out of our schools and out of sight for fear of "upsetting other people's religious beliefs." But recently, God has become the "King of Cool," as he had always been; especially now with the hype about a fugitive harboring herself in a church to escape deportation.

Obviously, Elvira Arellano is an intelligent woman. Look at what's she done to stay in the United States. She's been in the country for nine years illegally. She has been deported once. She knowingly committed a crime by falsifying a Social Security number to gain employment at O'Hare International Airport, yet she did not apply for a visa. (It only takes anywhere from five months to two years to obtain.) She has been granted three stays of deportation starting in 2003, after arrest. The option to return to Mexico is one she chooses not to take because she says she can't leave her son. Says who? The government isn't stopping her. She can take him with.

Ms.
Arellano is using this event to her own advantage under the guise of her son's ADHD (which is getting better) and not wanting to leave. With deportation still looming, she states, "If I have to spend 10 or 20 years in jail, I don't care. Because I am going to fight."

Wait a minute. She doesn't care? What about her son? Isn't he the reason she doesn't want to leave in the first place? And going to prison will help him how?

My son has a penchant for driving really fast. Recently he was ticketed for speeding. He was livid. Like a law-abiding citizen, I told him to pay the ticket because what he did was against the law, and he paid.

Well, hell. Forget that. Next time I'm going to tell him, "From now on, son, drive as fast as that car can go. The faster the better. And while you're at it, rob a bank or two. We need the extra cash. That way we won't have to pay taxes. Take it from the ones who need it and rightfully earned it; and, before the police can catch you, hole yourself up in a church, seek sanctuary and declare yourself a political activist. You are defending your right to help your disabled brother, your single-parent mother, and all the single mothers and disabled that are out there today."

God is good, God is great. But that's another column.

Below is a statement from Senator Dick Durbin/Illinois that I saw on the Illinois Minutemen site. Notice how he tags on commentary at the end for imm. reform. After this I'm going to post more interesting comments from this site (the link to the full article doesn't work yet -so don't know the source). I read this yesterday; It's not "Who is she, but who does she think she is..." Rosanna Pulido, head of Illinois Minutement says she is worried about the open defiance of this woman.

Several years ago, when Elvira came to us with a medical emergency regarding her son, I was happy to introduce a private relief bill on her behalf. It is our understanding that those circumstances have now changed.

It is an unfortunate truth that scores of people are in the same situation as Elvira and her family. We cannot fix the injustices of this system with private bills; only comprehensive immigration reform can permanently remedy this situation.”

08/20/06 - Should Senators Durbin and Obama, as well as Congressman Gutierrez be charged with aiding and abetting a known felon?

Elvira Arrellano was a "fugitive from justice" when seeking assistance from the senators. A known felon. Our senators are very up on immigration laws right now. ADHD is hardly a "medical emergency". Click here to read Senator Durbin's excuse for why he too, shouldn't be prosecuted by the federal government.

Other questions that aren't being asked, and should be, are:

Where is Elvira's son's father? She's been in this country for an admitted 8 years, her son is 7.
How can she be the president of a not-for-profit organization, when she is not even a legal citizen of this country? Did she use another false SS# for those documents as well? This too....is yet another felony. It seems she has a total disregard for the law.
Is the The Adalberto United Methodist Church a legitimate "Church" in the eyes of the government? Do they, or have they received funding of any kind from the state of Illinois or Federal government?
This story has gotten way out of control and signals one very important, but sad fact. We've lost control of America. When our nations' law enforcment openly backs down to a criminal because it may bring bad press, it simply means that they have conceded.

Now the question is, will Americans too, sit back and concede that illegal felons, can do what they want in this country while we (legal Americans) are held to a different standard?

I'm sure some of you will not agree with me on this, because you don't want your tax dollars feeding and housing an illegal immigrant. Personally, I think this lady should do several years behind bars. If an example needs to be used (and it does), she is the perfect candidate. Why you ask, because she has purposely drawn the spotlight to herself and her cause. Sending her to prison would be placing others that want to follower her lead on notice! Deportation is not a punishment, that is just doing what should have been done years ago. For example, let's assume your child gets caught cheating on a test in his English class. Is moving him to another class punishment - will he learn anything from dealing with the issue in this way? I seriously doubt it, the child needs expelled from school and you as the parent need to punish him further (grounded, removal of privledges, or whatever).

She says she is willing to spend 10 to 20 years in prison for her cause, well, where does that leave her son? She is just using her son as an excuse to get what she wants as she has done for the last 9 years. She needs to be sent to prison for 10 to 20 years and then deported!

I agree that something needs to be done and that this shouldn't be held out waiting for it to quietly fade into the sunset.

There's the issue of laws and deportation and the issue of sanctuary in churches and all those contributing to the blockage of justice. Her butt should be in custody somewhere. Charges should be filed against the minister, the senators and the rep. who have helped and are encouraging it.

What they are doing to the border patrol agents is an outrage. But they have to put their faith in the judicial system and they do what the law says and they have people fighting for them, while the legal process is being undergone. But not instead of it.

You will see store front churches next to every bar, employment center and everywhere else to run for sanctuary. There will be more bogus Revrends and churches than there are taco joints. They aren't going to be able to put them all up. So what's next? Sneek them out with a new identity to have it start all over?

Is law going to be a popularity contest as to what elected official likes you or your race to plug for "extra" privilages?

Wouldn't matter if they did......phony ID and SS# and a trip to "compassionate" friends and fresh life #3. Sure she'd be more easy to recognise since her face has been plastered coast to coast. But anyone that had just a day or two more and willing helpers and anyone familiar with the game could disappear to avoid being arrested or deported. They've had reports, supposidly from other churches, asking "Slim" how to go about making theirs a sanctuary church as well. They could have a whole underground unit going on in the "name of God." How many have "missed" reporting for hearings? Tons. A little more time and connections....and ..wa-la.....another new life. Get the "church" behind you and gee......another way to go. Wonder if they'll start building "convents" as a cover for rooming houses for all those seeking sanctuary? Can't harrass the kids, they are legal and have done nothing wrong. They can "follow" him home to a "convent" and it's still church grounds. They used to do that in movies all the time. Of course it was usually for un-wed mothers and a place for criminals to heal from battle wounds or royality to hide out from the angry peasants...

I'm just saying they need to "nip it in the bud" before it turns into more of a mockery than it is.
