10 Defendants Have Pleaded Guilty to Date

Baltimore, Maryland - Five defendants, all of Baltimore, pleaded guilty yesterday and today to conspiracy to distribute large amounts of cocaine or crack cocaine, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein:

Angel Francisco Velasquez, age 25,
Daniel Najera Gasca, age 26,
Rafael Gasca, age 33,
Patricia Fonseca, age 33, and
Enrique Najera Gasca, age 21.

According to the plea agreements presented to the court, from November 2005 through December 2006, the defendants conspired to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine in Baltimore. The defendants obtained the drugs from several sources in Colorado and Baltimore. During the course of this one-year investigation, government informants purchased over 1.25 kilograms of crack cocaine from members of the drug conspiracy. The defendants operated from bars and locations in the Fells Point area of Baltimore. Members of the organization also manufactured and sold hundreds of false driver’s licenses, social security cards, and Alien Registration documents. Agents executed several search and seizure warrants in December, 2006, upon the arrest of the defendants, and recovered kilograms of cocaine, drug scales, money, and hundreds of fraudulent identification documents.

A total of 10 defendants have pled guilty in this case. Angel Velasquez and Enrique Gasca face a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a $4 million fine for the crack cocaine conspiracy. Patricia Fonseca, Daniel Gasca, and Rafael Gasca face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a $2 million fine for the cocaine conspiracy. U.S. District Judge Andre M. Davis has scheduled sentencing for all five defendants on September 21, 2007.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Baltimore City Police Department for their investigative work. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kwame J. Manley and Stephanie A. Gallagher, who are prosecuting the case.
