Florida worker dies when tractor plunges into lakeFORT MYERS -
(AP) -- A construction worker was killed after the tractor he was driving tumbled down a steep embankment and plunged into a lake, authorities said.
David Vasquez, 18, of Lehigh Acres, was grading dirt near the man-made lake when the tractor suddenly slid Monday, said Chris Abbott, a spokesman for Stock Development, which is overseeing the home development project.
Vasquez screamed for help but went under water and did not resurface, investigators said. A co-worker went into the water but was unable to find him, said Sgt. Larry King, spokesman for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
A rescue team located Vasquez, but it was estimated that he may have been submerged for almost 30 minutes, deputies said. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Vasquez was employed by a subcontractor, Abbott said.
''We were pretty much shocked to have what happened out here . . . ,'' Abbott said. ``We really strive for safety on all of our developments.''
