France's Far-Right Leader Marine Le Pen Welcomes Donald Trump's Victory

PARIS - The leader of the French far-right National Front (FN) party on Wednesday welcomed the election of Republican Donald Trump to the United States presidency, calling it a victory for liberty.

During a press conference in Nanterre, on the outskirts of the French capital Paris, Marine Le Pen said Americans had rejected the status quo.

"What happened last night was not the end of the world, but the end of a world," Le Pen said, adding that the decision of the American people "could be viewed as a victory for liberty."

Le Pen said Trump's election demonstrated a will to discard the political establishment.

She said that France should receive the election of Trump as good news and that his rejection of globalization and his de-escalation of tensions with countries such as Russia would be beneficial for the French.

According to Le Pen, the waves of migrants of which France is victim would be reduced if Trump disengaged from the "bellicose expeditions" that cause them.

According to Le Pen, the American people had confirmed the huge political movement that was sweeping away the old regime and returning the power to the people.

Earlier on Wednesday, FN strategist Florian Philippot wrote on Twitter that "their world is collapsing; ours is being built."

Le Pen's FN party has seen recent regional gains across France, benefiting from anti-immigration sentiment spurred on by a series of fatal Islamic State terror attacks.

The party was founded by her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, in 1972. He was later expelled from the party by his daughter following controversial comments about the Holocaust _ the mass extermination of Jewish people in the Second World War.
