A close look at 'sanctuary cities'

A close look at 'sanctuary cities'

    News21

While Arizona has drawn national attention for its hard-line immigration policies, dozens of American communities are taking the opposite tack, attempting to protect immigrants from close scrutiny of their legal status.

These communities - called "sanctuary cities" by both critics and defenders - are home to many of the estimated 10.8 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and include Austin, New York City, San Diego and Minneapolis. Their laws and policies vary widely, but all, in effect, protect some illegal immigrants from deportation.

In San Francisco, where its designation as a "city of sanctuary" is explicitly written into its municipal code, the city's sheriff waged a recent battle against federal law enforcement to resist the implementation of a program that would deport illegal immigrants found guilty of misdemeanors.

Princeton, N.J., began issuing municipal identification cards this summer, implicitly affording illegal immigrants a means of accessing various public and private services to which they would otherwise not be entitled. Other cities also have begun issuing identification cards.

In Arizona, no city has ever sought a sanctuary-city designation, but several have been given that label by critics who believe the cities aren't doing everything they can to target illegal immigrants. Those communities, which include Chandler and Mesa, are trying to find ways to enforce the state's new immigration laws without destroying law enforcement's relationship with the Hispanic community.

They're finding it a fine line to walk.

In San Francisco, where its designation as a "city of sanctuary" is explicitly written into its municipal code,
Any other state ought to be able to bring suit against San Francisco, as how can S.F. assure any other state that those not legally there will stay there and not move and impose unjust burdens on other states or municipalities?

How can the Justice Dept. allow for such a policy that allows for a illegal class of persons to be protected?

Our federal government is complicit with such actions and impeachment proceedings should be set upon this injustice.

Should the Republicans wish to investigate wrong doings by this administration, they could start right here with concern to sactuary cities.

How can Americans take either party seriously when they both are complicit in deriliction of duty?

"Maybe America's should sue these sanctuary cities for lost wages, discrimination, wrongful death, tax fraud, and I'm sure they're guilty of a whole slew of other local and federal crimes against they're citizens!"

    NO AMNESTY

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.

thedramaofmylife, I feel for you. I lived in the west valley and it was horrible. I noticed LOTS and LOTS of people that were not mentally "there". I just figured it was the heat.

When I moved to Arizona I couldn't believe how illegals just did what ever they wanted, when they wanted. I noticed a shift when Sheriff Joe started getting serious. They were not as out in the open as they were. But, we all knew they didn't go home as the media was saying. They were just getting craftier at the game. They have no intentions of going home or following any laws. This country needs to get it. They are hanging on until we give them everything we have. Between them and the Middle East, we are in trouble. We need a government that puts it's foot down. Sanctuary cities are not legal. Period. We need protection. We need our constitution. We need people who actually believe in our country. This administration does not give a damned about anything except votes and power plays. And, I'm starting to believe it actually is intending to give our power away. I just can't figure out who is behind Obama. Who is his puppeteer?
Tell me about it, I do believe that the issue has gotten as bad as it has in the Phoenix area because Arizonians sat complacently and let it go on for so long. Back home in the Metro Detroit area things are run by UAW and Teamsters for the most part. If this sort of thing went there on I know my fellow Michiganders would be hitting the streets protesting and throwing up the BS flags.

My mom moved to the west valley from here and she tried to talk me into going over there, but I'm just taking my family back to Michigan. And this time we're going to the UP where I know there'll be hardly any illegals. My mom claims that it is so much better in Goodyear and that the illegals will never take over that area because the AF base is there. I told her that she is in denial and just because they haven't called her yet for a dinner date doesn't mean they aren't coming. lol The area is just new, I give it about 10 years at the most before they take over that area too.
