Jerel Stanfield , the man at the center of a police crackdown on Fresno gang members, has served time in prison for street terrorism and being a felon in possession of a firearm, court records show.
Stanfield, 24, was shot by police Sunday near Arthur and Strother avenues just south of Chandler Airport after a vehicle pursuit. He is a suspect in a central Fresno shooting on March 29 that mortally wounded William Simpson, 24. Simpson died of his injuries on Sunday.
Stanfield has several convictions for weapons crimes. In 2007, he pleaded no contest to carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle. In 2008, he pleaded no contest to the same charges and also to the street terrorism charges and was sentenced to two years in state prison.
Police say that the pistol Stanfield was carrying Sunday was used to shoot five people in three incidents, including the Simpson murder. Police have traced the last legal owner to Arizona and are checking to see if it was stolen there.
