I've found it ironic that some of these same tree-hugging liberals protest at WTO and other openly global organizations but yet are marching in lock step on the illegal immigration issue--despite its potentially devastating consequences for the environment and its rather clear implications for global government.

    Keylime,

We are thinking along the same lines, however, doesn't the Libertarian Party favor 'no borders'??

Not that we would know the difference ----

While I do think what we need in this country, desperately, is a strong 3rd party and I think we could work toward one.

Barring someone with the money, contacts, and personality of a Ross Perot, the chances of a third party being any threat to the status quo is slim to none.

We need to just vote out everyone in there - everyone. Party doesn't matter - they are all the same. Then do it again and again.

So many people in this country are addicted to party politics. There are still people saying, 'Well the Democrats will do better, the Republicans are again illegal immigration'. It is really just being afraid to let go and face the facts they both sold us down the river.

People, just step out there - can we do any worse with a complete new slate - except Tancredo - let's give him 'instant seniority'.

    Libertarian Party and border policy

    nntrixie,

It is true the LP does favor an open border policy for immigration. However, they favor a very secure border against an invasion by a foreign power.

The main reasons I think the LP are the best solution is:

    1) they are the third largest party and best positioned to take on the GOP/Dems,
    2) their position is to dismantle most of the current system,
    3) as part of #2 they would get rid of minimum wage and the other magnets that draw people to this country such as welfare and Medicaid.

I believe the main reason we have the immigration problem is that our minimum wage is so high. It is currently nine times what it is in Mexico and Ted Kennedy wants to raise it to twelve times what it is there.

If the minimum wage in Canada were $45/hour, Americans would be breaking into Canada!

There is no reason for an hour of unskilled labor to be worth $5.15/hour in Laredo but less than $4.50/DAY in Nuevo Laredo just 50 feet away.

You can see what the minimum wage is for various countries at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_minimum_wage

Sometimes people think that a Libertarian society would be one where "poor people would be starving and dying in the streets". That clearly would not happen because most people have already proven they believe in helping their fellow man by voting for the government run social programs we have today.

Under an Libertarian government those aid organizations would effectively still exist but they would be privately run and the money that had been collected previously via taxes would go to them (plus the overhead the bureaucrats had been skimming off the top). Any aid organization that failed to perform efficiently would be replaced by one that did.

Forgot to mention I agree with your basic position

    nntrixie,

I forgot to mention that I agree with your basic position: we have to completely get rid of those who are currently in power and that means voting third party, not GOP/Dem.

Of course, that third party would have to have a sane platform. A socialist third party would open the border AND increase social programs making the situation worse. However, I don't see a socialist TP making much progress in this country.
