Have to agree with axolotl, and welcome.
What could possibly be the problem with passing laws, like cell-phone-in-car use, which would go to serve the safety of those in cars around the yakker? What is the problem with real id, when so many Americans are finding their identities stolen, or at least made vulnerable to theft by being shipped overseas for cheap payroll processing? And what exactly is wrong with teaching kids to take care and not waste or pollute natural resources like the water we drink or the air we breathe? I have to assume Mr. Ewart has never had to breathe the "perfectly safe" air after 9/11 or to extract a bloody person from a car crash.
While his outrage may sound good on the surface, IMO, his attitude is that of the 20th century and this administration: when something goes wrong, ignore the underlying problems and hope they go away by themselves.

I believe the 'sickness' can be cured by attacking its central cause, and that is lobby money. Virtually everything ShockedInCalifornia posted (and it is a good post) has been brought about by legislators creating laws and regulations at the behest of special interest groups who pour billions of dollars of lobby money into campaigns, perks, and outright under the table bribes. Obama's half-billion dollar fund raising for his campaign illustrates how ludicrous the present system has become.

Yep, it's no longer democracy, but Moneycracy. May the man with the most $$$ win! It's also getting closer to fascism, since those who contribute most are corporations, and fascism is defined as "a marriage of a corporation and a state". And especially now, that some of the biggest corporations were bailed out with government money.
