H.R. 946, Mass Immigration Reduction Act
HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS?
H.R. 946, Mass Immigration Reduction Act
Current immigration policies have overloaded the immigration system, making it impossible to properly screen aliens for admission, track aliens in the U.S., and enforce laws against illegal immigration. Without a reduction in the enormous immigration workload, we won’t be able get a handle on the problem while still we still face a flow of more than one million new immigrants every year. (Currently, more than three million people are already on a waiting list to immigrate to the United States, and many millions more have the necessary family ties to apply.)
H.R. 946, the Mass Immigration Reduction Act, introduced by Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), would bring about a major reduction in immigration for a fixed period of time. Just as one would shut off the main water valve before attempting to fix a leaky pipe, the United States needs to halt most forms of immigration while we repair a dysfunctional policy.
Stopping most forms of immigration temporarily would allow us time to devise an immigration policy which meets America’s needs, not just the desires of recent and would-be immigrants. It would also allow us to concentrate on stopping the massive illegal immigration problem and regaining control of our borders.
H.R. 946 would place a time-out on most immigration by:
Halting the immigration of extended relatives of individuals who are not U.S. citizens. This includes categories such as brothers, sisters, parents, and adult children, while preserving nuclear family migration of spouses and minor children;
Reducing the number of employment sponsored visas, while preserving 5,000 visas for priority workers;
Eliminating the unwise and unnecessary diversity lottery, which awards 55,000 visas each year by a random lottery;
Giving immigrant status only to the children and spouses of U.S. citizens or priority workers; and
Reducing refugee admissions and asylum adjustments to 25,000 per year.
FAIR supports H.R. 946 because it will help:
Protect Homeland Security. Current legal immigration levels (approximately one million per year) are so high that immigration officials are unable to thoroughly screen immigrants before allowing them into the country. All 19 of the 9/11 terrorists, for example, were granted visas by the U.S. government. Currently, an estimated 400,000 individuals allowed to enter the U.S. legally have been ordered deported, yet immigration authorities cannot find them.
Restore Order to U.S. Immigration Policy. A time-out would reduce the enormous workload currently facing immigration officials, allowing the United States to regain control of its borders and protect the nation against terrorism. Freeing up resources during a time-out would permit the Department of Homeland Security to focus on the domestic fight against terrorism, enhanced border security, and increased interior immigration enforcement.
Facilitate Assimilation. We have successfully absorbed and assimilated immigrants in the past because we have periodically halted immigration. With the exception of immediate family members of U.S. citizens and legitimate refugees whose backgrounds have been thoroughly investigated, we must discontinue our special interest-driven immigration policy and allow the country time to absorb and assimilate the tens of millions of immigrants who have arrived on our shores over the past two decades.Last edited by Jean; 08-20-2013 at 07:48 PM.
