I heard a good argument for a border fence this morning on CNN. The show that follows Wolf Blitzer had a reporter who went out on an overnight stake-out with a Border Patrol team on the Arizona border. She described as she watched group after group being led by a smuggler through her infrared goggles and they had ways and techniques that had them evading the agent. She said they were successful in hiding in the brush and the agents just couldn't get to where they were.

If there was a fence, they would be stopped in their tracks and could go no further, but the way it is now, they sneak in and get right past the agents.

She also talked about why the agents are so heavily armed. She said most of the smugglers are armed. The agents, though armed, can't use their weapons to fire at these people. Their weapons are for defending themselves agains attachs on them.

Everything I heard sounds like an excellant reason for a fence yesterday rather than in the future.
